VW ID.4 Looks Virtually Production Ready, Will Be Launched In Europe Later This Year

Volkswagen’s electric vehicle offensive continues as the company has confirmed the production version of the ID. CROZZ concept will be called ID.4.

That’s hardly a surprise, but the company released new photos showing the crossover is virtually production ready.

Lightly covered in a blue wrap, the ID.4 has a rugged appearance as it features a plastic body cladding and faux skid plates. The front end also sports a fully enclosed grille, LED-infused headlights and prominent air intakes.

Moving further back, we can see flowing body work and a rakish windscreen. The model also has streamlined door handles, a sloping roof and a relatively small rear window. Other highlights include a full width taillights and a tailgate-mounted spoiler.

Volkswagen is keeping full details under wraps, but they confirmed the ID.4 will be launched in Europe later this year. Unlike the ID.3, the ID.4 will be a global vehicle that is produced and sold in Europe, China and North America.

Speaking of North America, Volkswagen has already confirmed the ID.4 will be built at their plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee starting in 2022. In order to gear up for production, the company is investing $800 (£627 / €718) million to expand the plant’s body shop and build a new facility for assembling battery packs.

The ID.4 will ride on the MEB platform and be launched with rear-wheel drive. A more powerful all-wheel drive variant will arrive later and it is slated to have two electric motors. Volkswagen was coy on performance specifications, but confirmed one of the variants will have a range of up to 311 miles (500 km) according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure.

Besides talking about the ID.4, Volkswagen revealed they have received 37,000 reservations for the ID.3 1st Edition which is limited to 30,000 units. Since the model is sold out, the company is now directing customers to the ID.3 Pure, ID.3 Pro and ID.3 Pro S.

The entry-level ID.3 Pure features a 45 kWh battery which enables the model to travel up to 205 miles (330 km) on a single charge. A 125 hp (93 kW / 126 PS) electric motor comes standard, but customers can also opt for a more powerful 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) unit.

In Germany, the ID.3 Pure will cost less than €30,000 and come equipped with LED lighting units, an Air Care Climatronic air conditioning system and natural voice control. The model also sports a keyless ignition, ambient interior lighting and driver assistance systems such as Lane Assist, Front Assist, Park Distance Control and Dynamic Road Sign Display.

The ID.3 Pro will start at less than €35,000 and it features a larger 58 kWh battery which provides a range of up to 261 miles (420 km) on a single charge. The model can also be equipped with an electric motor that has outputs of 143 hp (107 kW / 146 PS) or 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS).

The range-topping ID.3 Pro S has an even larger 77 kWh battery and this increases the range to 342 miles (550 km). It also comes standard with an electric motor that develops 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS).

The ID.3 will be offered with an assortment of customization options including Style Silver and Style Penny Copper exterior packages. They add 20-inch wheels as well as silver or copper accents.

To spruce up the cabin, there will be Style and Style Plus packages. They add Sumba Flow fabric seats with ArtVelours microfleece as well as a heated leather steering wheel and an ambient lighting system which has 30 colors instead of the usual 10. The Style Plus package goes even further as it adds power heated front seats with a massage function. Customers can also opt for an augmented reality head-up display and a seven-speaker premium audio system with a subwoofer.

The ID.3 will be launched this summer and the company plans to build 1.5 million electric vehicles as early as 2025.
