Volvo Unveils V90 Estate



Volvo pulled the covers off their long-awaited V90 Estate in Stockholm today, making this the latest model to take its place within in their flagship 90 series, next to the XC90 SUV and S90 saloon.

The V90 is meant to build on the brand's rich heritage in the estate segment, which began 60 years ago with the Duett and is now being ushered into the future with the help of a car that features cutting-edge Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive technology.

"We have a very strong position in the estate segment," said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. "In many people’s minds we are known as the definitive estate brand. While the Volvo brand today stands for more than estates, we are proud to carry forward this rich heritage with the V90."

Dr Peter Mertens, senior R&D exec, commented: "We have a very strong offer in the V90. Our PowerPulse technology is designed to deliver a distinct performance boost to our diesel engine, while the T8 Twin Engine petrol plug-in hybrid will deliver around 410 hp and a pure electric range of around 50 km."

In total, the V90 will be available with 5 different power units, two petrol, one hybrid and two diesels. The 254 PS T5, 320 PS T6 AWD and 407 PS T8 AWD make up the petrol/hybrid line-up, whereas 190 PS D4 and 235 PS D5 AWD units make up the diesel range.

The V90 is also build on Volvo's specially-designed and fully modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which in turn opens the range up for now opportunities in terms of how a Volvo vehicle can be designed, built and equipped.

Volvo claims that the it also comes with the most advanced standard safety package on the market, with large animal detection, run-off road mitigation, and class-leading connectivity which includes smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay.

Among the V90's standard safety features you'll find Adaptive Cruise Control, Pilot Assist II (<130km/h), Distance Alert, Lane Keeping Aid, Driver Alert Control, Road Sign Information, Speed Limiter (with road sign limiter), a wide array of airbags, Lane Departure Warning and the previously mentioned Run-off Road Protection. Customers will be able to order the IntelliSafe Surround Package (BLIS, Rear Collision Warning, Cross Traffic Alert, 360 Camera, Park Assist Pilot, Two integrated two-stage booster cushions) as an optional extra. As for its semi-autonomous tech, when you activate the Pilot Assist system inside the V90, the car will be able to drive itself up to 130 km/h without the aid of a leading vehicle. However, Volvo states that the driver is still legally responsible for driving the vehicle (hands on wheel, eyes on road, mind on driving), and can override the system at any time by using the brake pedal, accelerator pedal or steering wheel. The system is also cleverly switched off if the driver does not keep at least one hand on the wheel.

Droptop crossovers have always been rather odd and the T-Roc Cabriolet is no different. It will be the only convertible Volkswagen on sale for the foreseeable future and will celebrate its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
