2020 GMC Sierra HD Has Brains, Brawn And 15 Cameras That Let You See Through Its Trailer


Not long after introducing some smaller GMC Sierra models earlier this month, the automaker has lifted the veil on the all-new 2020 Sierra Heavy Duty.


GMC has outfitted the heavy duty pickup with a plethora of new features. One of the most important updates is the ProGrade Trailering System.


This system provides the driver with 15 camera views, including a transparent trailer view that allows those behind the wheel to tow with ease. Other features of the ProGrade Trailering System are a Trailer Light Test, Trailer Electrical Diagnostics, Trailer Tire Pressure and Temperature Monitoring, Pre-Maintenance Reminders and a Departure Checklist.


A host of other technologies have been added to the Sierra Heavy Duty to make towing a breeze. For example, there’s an Auto Electric Park Brake, Park Grade Hold Assist, Integrated trailer brake controller, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, Trailer Sway Control, Auto Grade Braking, Diesel Exhaust Braking, and a Tow/Haul mode. To put it simply, the new Sierra Heavy Duty thrives when there’s something hooked up to its rear.


An eye-catching design also sets the new Sierra Heavy Duty apart from the old model. There’s a massive front grille, headlights with GMC’s ‘light blades’, LED fog lamps, and roof marker lights on all dual-rear-wheel HDs and Sierra HD Denali models where they’re permitted by law.


It’s not just the exterior design that makes the new pickup stand out. The vehicle itself is actually longer and taller than the previous model.


All 2020 GMC Sierra Heavy Duty models use a large 6.6-liter turbo-diesel Duramax engine that delivers 445 hp and 910 lb-ft (1233 Nm) of torque. This engine is mated to an all-new 10-speed Allison automatic transmission. With its potent powertrain, the pickup can tow in excess of 30,000 lbs (13607 kg).


GMC has also updated the Sierra AT4 HD for the 2020 model year. The AT4 is the more off-road focused Sierra Heavy Duty variant and includes a number of dark chrome exterior touches as well as bespoke front and rear bumpers. Inside, the vehicle includes darkened trim, textured aluminum finishes, Jet Black trim, leather seats, and embroidered AT4 badges on the headrests.


The AT4 also includes off-road suspension, bespoke 18-inch wheels, a 15-inch Head-Up Display, and Traction Select System with a specific Off-Road mode.


Sales of the 2020 Sierra Heavy Duty will start later this year in 2500HD and 3500HD configurations. Prices have yet to be announced.

Droptop crossovers have always been rather odd and the T-Roc Cabriolet is no different. Ford's new GT Competition Series was built with weight-saving in mind, but also with an improved center of gravity for better road-holding.
