Maserati Alfieri Coming Next Year With Three Electrified Powertrains

The production-spec Maserati Alfieri will premiere at next year’s Geneva Motor Show, the Italian company has confirmed.

Maserati first unveiled the Alfieri as a concept back in 2014, but the production model has been delayed multiple times due to changes to FCA’s scheduling. This will finally change when the road-going Alfieri hits the market in 2021 or 2022, between 12 and 24 months after its unveiling.

When the Alfieri was initially confirmed for production in May 2014, Maserati claimed that it would be offered with three V6 powertrains delivering between 404 hp and 513 hp. Well, these plans appear to have changed significantly.

The dashing sports car will be built on an aluminum space frame and will be available as a mild hybrid, a plug-in hybrid as well as a an all-electric with three e-motors, four-wheel drive, torque vectoring, and 800V battery technology. The automaker boasts that it will be “the Maserati of EVs” and the “first luxury EV coupe”, offering a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint of around 2 seconds and a top speed in excess of 300 km/h (186 mph).

The Alfieri will be offered in both coupe and convertible forms and, while hybrid sports cars are still in an early phase, Maserati believes that it is one of the few car manufacturers that can make such vehicles without losing money.

“For a long time, it will not be a business. We are all dreaming. Maserati is one of the few brands who can sell cars at the cost and reality of the technology and still make money,” CEO Harald Wester told Autocar.

“You need hundreds and thousands of sales from major car makers to make the same money and also hit the 95g/km CO2 emissions target. The only way to do this is being part of a big group with a mix of high and low products, but ultimately profitability will still go in one direction.”
