2019 SSC Tuatara To Debut At Monterey Car Week, Promises To Have Highest Top Speed In The World

Seven years after the Tuatara was originally unveiled, SSC North America has announced plans to unveil the production model at Monterey Car Week.

Since so much time has passed, little is known about the car. However, the company says the 2019 Tuatara will be a “next generation hypercar that boasts an unmatched drag coefficient, track-level handling characteristics and a top speed that is projected to easily surpass the current world record.” SSC didn’t specify the latter figure, but the company’s statement suggests the Tuatara will be able to exceed the 284.55 mph (457.94 km/h) top speed achieved by the Koenigsegg Agera RS.

While the Tuatara was slated to be launched in 2013, the company explained its prolonged absence by saying the model has been subjected to “years of methodical engineering.” SSC says this extended development time will allow the car to have “unparalleled performance” as well as a striking presence.

Speaking of the latter, the teaser photos suggest the production model will closely resemble the concept that was unveiled nearly a decade ago. Despite the similarities, we can see some minor changes including a modified rear bumper, a revised greenhouse and triangular exhaust tips.

It remains unclear if there are any other changes, but it’s possible given the model’s lengthy development. As a result, it’s unclear clear if the car will still use a twin-turbo 6.9-liter V8 engine that produces 1350 hp (1007 kW / 1368 PS) and 1280 lb-ft (1733 Nm) of torque when running on 91 octane fuel. Over five years ago, when the engine was announced, SCC hinted it was capable of producing more than 1700 hp (1268 kW / 1723 PS).

A lot of questions remain, but we’ll likely get answers when the 2019 Tuatara makes its debut on August 24th.
