This Is The European 2019 Toyota RAV4 And It Gets A 2.0L Gas Engine Too


Toyota chose the New York Auto Show as the venue to unveil the new RAV4. But the United States won’t be the only market, of course, where the new crossover will be offered.


Following its arrival in North American showrooms later this year, the fifth-generation RAV4 is set for introduction in the European market at the beginning of next year. (In the first quarter, according to the manufacturer.)


Full pricing and availability information are still to follow, but the parameters are essentially the same. Based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, the new RAV4 pushes its wheels to the extremities to offer more space inside without significantly enlarging its footprint on the road. That ought to keep the vehicle maneuverable on city streets. The slightly enlarged model is wrapped in entirely new sheetmetal with a more robust design. XSE, Limited, and Adventure models will be offered, though we don’t know if all versions will be available in Europe.


As with the US version, the Euro-spec RAV4 will be offered with a choice of two powertrain options. There’s a conventional 2.0-liter gasoline engine, and a 2.5-liter hybrid. Specifications have yet to be announced, but both will be available with all-wheel drive – mechanical in the conventional version, electric in the hybrid – with the former paired to either a manual or automatic transmission.


Much as it is in America, the RAV4 ranks as one of Toyota’s top sellers in the European market. Out of the 927,060 vehicles it sold there last year, the outgoing RAV4 accounted for 112,537 units – roughly half of which (at 58,612 units) were hybrids. Only the more coupe-like C-HR crossover and the Yaris and Auris hatchbacks outsold the RAV4 in Europe last year. And we wouldn’t be surprised to see the new model increase those figures, both in absolute and relative terms.

Droptop crossovers have always been rather odd and the T-Roc Cabriolet is no different. It will be the only convertible Volkswagen on sale for the foreseeable future and will celebrate its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Ford's new GT Competition Series was built with weight-saving in mind, but also with an improved center of gravity for better road-holding.
