Apple has just unveiled the new iPhone SE, sticking with the rumored date, even if there was no flashy event - just a press release. Despite what its name might have you believe, the new iPhone SE is more of a refresh of the iPhone 8 than of the original SE. You can think of it as an iPhone 8 with the latest chipset and a better camera. Oh, there are new colors too, but that's about it. The new iPhone SE has the iPhone 8's 4.7-inch "Retina HD" screen with True Tone and support for Dolby Vision and HDR10 playback. This is surrounded by large bezels, and below there's a sapphire crystal covered capacitive Touch ID fingerprint sensor like in the iPhone 8. It's powered by the A13 SoC, just like the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max. Its camera has benefited from the new chipset too. Apple has announced its next-generation iPhones: the 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro and 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max. Despite the number change, the two phones look pretty similar to last year’s iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max but with one major change: a third rear camera. According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the iPhone 11 Pro is designed for customers who want the “most sophisticated technology.” There’s a new matte finish on the back and new colors: green, space gray, silver, and gold. Apple’s also upgraded the display to a new OLED panel, which goes up to an even brighter 1,200 nits, a 2 million to 1 contrast ratio, and is 15 percent more energy efficient. Apple is introducing a successor to its iPhone XR today, dubbed iPhone 11. The cheaper LCD-equipped iPhone XR has become the most popular iPhone in the world over the past year, and Apple is now updating it for 2019 and beyond. Like last year’s model, the iPhone 11 includes a 6.1-inch display, and the design is almost identical to last year, too, with the notch at the front for the Face ID camera. Apple is adding new color options, with purple, white, green, yellow, black, and red all available. Apple’s biggest design changes are in the camera at the rear of the device. Last year’s iPhone XR had a single 12-megapixel wide-angle camera, but the iPhone 11 now includes a dual-camera system with an additional 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera that supports 2x optical zoom. Apple hasn’t done much with its ultra-thin MacBook Air in recent years, opting to slim down some of its other offerings instead. But the computer is reasonably popular, and according to Apple analyst KGI Securities (via 9to5Mac), the company is reportedly planning to release a cheaper model at some point in the second quarter of 2018. According to 9to5Mac, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects that Apple will release a 13-inch MacBook Air “with a lower price tag,” later this year, and that the lower price could help boost Apple’s laptop sales. While the line celebrates its tenth year in 2018, the line has largely only received incremental updates, the last of which came last summer, when Apple updated it with a faster 1.8GHz Intel processor. The next major update to the operating system running on millions of iPhones and iPads will improve on the “core technologies” that power the OS and also introduce numerous new features. Chief among them are new, improved productivity solutions for iPad. The first among new iOS 11 feature demonstrated by Craig Federighi was synchronized messages across iOS and macOS. If you erase a message on your iPhone or iPad, that will now be reflected on your Mac as well.
