Unlike some of its rivals, namely Ford and General Motors, the North American Volkswagen Passat isn’t going anywhere – at least not yet. And to further showcase their dedication to family sedans, the Germans uncovered the facelifted version of the Passat at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. It’s still based on the same platform as its predecessor that’s unrelated to the European market Passat which is underpinned by the MQB. Nonetheless, it gets completely new sheetmetal, including a different profile and a more sloping roofline than the model it replaces. There’s also a more imposing front grille that encompasses standard LED headlights, while at the back, along with newly styled tail-lamps, there’s an Arteon-inspired badging on the boot lid. Volkswagen has used the North American International Auto Show to reveal major investments in the United States and its goal to become a major player in one of the most important automotive markets in the world. Speaking in Detroit, Volkswagen brand boss Dr. Herbert Diess said "By 2020, we will offer at least two new U.S. models annually, covering key segments in the United States." Besides the all-new Jetta, the company will introduce will introduce the Arteon later this year. It will be followed by the redesigned Passat in 2019 and two crossovers based on the MQB platform. Volkswagen's MEB-based electric vehicle will arrive in the United States in 2020. It will be a crossover and it will pave the way for future electric vehicles. 2020 is also the year that Volkswagen hopes to "break-even" in the North American market.
