The next-generation Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet Suburban models have been unveiled at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, boasting a series of improvements differentiating them from GM’s outgoing offerings. Underpinning the highly-profitable duo is GM’s T1 truck platform that will also be used by the next-generation Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon. This platform also adopts GM’s Global B electrical architecture and support over-the-air updates as well as advanced network security for highly-automated driving technologies. One particularly significant upgrade is the presence of new multi-link, independent rear suspension that promises to transform how the duo ride – at least compared to their truck-based predecessors. Following the Tahoe RST’s success, Chevrolet announced the launch of the Suburban RST Performance Package. The new RST Performance Package will be the first Suburban that uses the 420hp 6.2-liter V8 engine. Other features include the Magnetic Ride Control suspension and the new Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission. “Tahoe RST with the Performance Package is the fastest-turning Tahoe model, and we’ve received customer requests to offer the same performance and power to Suburban RST”, said Sandor Piszar, director of Chevy Trucks Marketing and Advertising. “Delivering on those requests with the Suburban RST Performance Package is another example of how Chevrolet has continually invested in the segment, developing models with combinations of capability, technology and performance to meet the needs of different customers”, Piszar added. Chevrolet has released a plethora of eye-catching concepts at SEMA, with the 2018 Corvette Carbon 65 Edition also joining the party. For starters, Chevrolet’s SEMA booth will include the new Silverado Centennial Edition and Colorado Centennial Edition, two vehicles created to celebrate the brand’s 100 successful years of building pickup trucks. This duo will be joined by the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Midnight and Dusk Editions. Elsewhere, the automaker has created the Silverado Performance Concept, fitted with a supercharged 5.3-liter V8 engine, a set of large brakes, lowered ride height and some visual modifications. The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban may be huge, bulky SUVs but that hasn’t stopped the automaker from adding some sporty touches to them with the new RST package. The package, standing for Rally Sport Truck, provides Tahoe and Suburban customers with a selection of eye-catching new features and is aimed at those “who want a street performance look without sacrificing capability or refinement”, according to Chevrolet Truck marketing director Sandor Piszar. Both Tahoe and Suburban RST models include a performance exhaust system from Borla which not only promises to sound good, but offers 28 per cent better exhaust flow, resulting in a 7-10 hp gain at the rear wheels. The SUVs can also be optioned with Brembo six-piston front calipers that bite down on huge 410 x 32 mm discs. In the looks department, the changes are quite comprehensive.
