Arsenal Win Community Shield With Win Over Chelsea

Image
Arsenal defeated Chelsea in a dramatic penalty shoot-out at Wembley to open the new English season with silverware. Thibaut Courtois and Alvaro Morata missed from the spot as Arsenal claimed the Community Shield by beating 10-man Chelsea 4-1 on penalties. After a 1-1 draw in regulation time, the shoot-out saw goalkeeper Courtois, an unusual choice to take his side's second penalty, bizarrely fire his attempt way over. That was followed by new signing Morata missing the target on his competitive debut, with Olivier Giroud going on to score the winning penalty. In the match itself, Victor Moses, sent off when the Blues lost the FA Cup final to Arsenal in May, struck early in the second half with what looked like it would be the winner. But Chelsea had Pedro sent off for a rash challenge on Mohamed Elneny and Arsenal substitute Sead Kolasinac, on his competitive bow, scored a header from the resulting free-kick with eight minutes remaining. Alexandre Lacazette, given h...

Arsenal win 13th FA Cup title

Image
Arsenal and Chelsea clashed at Wembley to decide the winner of the FA Cup for the 2016/17 season. For Arsenal it was a chance to redeem something out of a failed season in which they could not finish in the top-four for the first time in more than a decade. It was also a chance for them to become the most successful club in history of the 146-year-old tournament. And after 90 minutes, they managed to do so with a 2-1 win and denied Chelsea a League and Cup double. IndianExpress

Chelsea win Premier League after beating West Brom 1-0

Image
Chelsea have been crowned champions for the sixth time in their history. Antonio Conte's side have won the Premier League with two games to spare after a late goal by Michy Batshuayi secured the title with a 1-0 win over West Brom. The £33million striker has endured a frustrating season, spent largely on the bench. But he came to Chelsea's rescue on 81 minutes - just five minutes after replacing Pedro as a substitute - and produced the all-important title-winning goal. Now he wants his players to make it a "double". He has also led his players to the FA Cup final as they face Arsenal later this month as he hopes to win another trophy to his impressive first season. Conte said: “We were not lucky, we did a great job. It is a great season, but to be a fantastic season we have to win the FA Cup. “This is for my players. I have to say thanks for their commitment, their attitude and passion, and their will to do something great this season. “Now, after thi...

Chelsea have officially qualified for the Champions League

Image
Chelsea have qualified for next season's Champions League after a 3-0 win at Everton on Sunday afternoon following a year of no European football. Pedro's stunning goal set Chelsea on their way at Goodison Park as they earned more than the point they needed to clinch a return to the Champions League. Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink's Chelsea failed to secure any European football last season after a disastrous season saw the Blues finish in 10th place only a year after winning the title. Chelsea remain favourites to win the Premier League title but Roman Abramovich's minimum expectation for his side this season was to qualify for the Champions League again. Qualification is financially important for Europe's top clubs and Chelsea will compete for a share of the €1.3 billion prize fund for clubs. Chelsea will earn a least €12.7 million from UEFA for their participation next season, but that could rise to a maximum of €57.2 million if they win the competitio...

John Terry to leave Chelsea at the end of the season

Image
John Terry will call time on an illustrious 22-year association at Chelsea at the end of the season - but insists he is 'eager' to not hang up his boots just yet. The 36-year-old has been a Blues stalwart, having come through the club's academy and first-team since 1995. But in a joint statement made on Monday afternoon with the club, it was revealed that a partnership which has yielded 14 major honours together will soon cease. 'After 22 years there is so much to say and so many people to thank at this great football club,' he told the club's official website. 'From coaches, team-mates and staff to the fans who have given me so much support down the years, I can't thank you enough. There will be opportunities for me to speak further about this over the coming weeks. 'I will decide on my future in due course, but for now I am committed to helping the team achieve success this season. 'The club and I have always had a fantastic relat...

Jose Mourinho pays tribute to Claudio Ranieri with initials on shirt as he slams Leicester players after sacking

Image
Jose Mourinho has condemned Leicester's 'selfish' players for letting down Claudio Ranieri after he was sacked just nine months on from lifting the Premier League title. Mourinho turned up for his press conference with the initials 'CR' printed on his training top in dedication to Ranieri after posting a picture of them together on social media. The Portuguese coach was also sacked the season after a title win — by Chelsea in December 2015 — but said that was 'peanuts' compared to the way Ranieri has been treated by Leicester. And Mourinho saved his most scathing criticism for the players who are understood to have turned against the Italian. 'If some of the stories are true, it's hard to find words to justify it,' he said. 'As managers we have to cope with that. 'Probably the season started with the typical selfishness of others, people thinking about new contracts, leaving, more money, forgetting who helped them to reach a ...
