It's been about a dozen years since Daihatsu introduced its second-generation Terios. That makes it prime for replacement, and that replacement was unveiled today in Indonesia. The compact crossover has grown, as so many have, in its latest iteration – by 6.7 inches, to be precise. At under 175 inches from nose to tail, it's still smaller than a Toyota RAV4, but it's grown large enough to accommodate seven passengers. Styling is clearly drawn from recent crossover concepts Daihatsu has showcased, like the DN Multisix displayed at this year's Indonesian Motor Show and (perhaps to a lesser extent) the FT revealed in 2015. Ditching the old Terios' platform, the third-generation model is based on the underpinnings of the Xenia (also known as the Toyota Avanza) minivan. Power comes from a 1.5-liter inline-four, which you might expect to be driving the front wheels, but actually drives the rear, through either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic....

Daihatsu Terios - now that's a name we haven’t heard in a while, but we should get used to it again, as Toyota's subsidiary is preparing to present an entirely new generation of the model. Teased on their official Indonesian website, the mini SUV partially reveals its profile, with a shark-fin antenna, tailgate-mounted spoiler, and new lighting units on both ends. The new design hasn’t shifted away from the second-generation, but it's believed that the upcoming Daihatsu Terios has been inspired by the FT Concept, presented in 2015, at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show. IndianAutosBlog speculates that the new Terios will make use of the same 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that powers the current iteration, rated at 109PS (107hp). Daihatsu is the latest Japanese automaker to reveal its lineup for this year's Tokyo Motor Show, headlined by two completely new concepts to show the way forward for the small-car specialists. The little red job pictured above is called the DN Compagno, reviving the spirit of the Vignale-designed model line Daihatsu produced in the 1960s and powered by a 1.0-liter turbocharged engine (though Daihatsu envisions fitting a 1.2-liter hybrid in there just the same). The new concept takes the form of a rakish four-door coupe, with bright metallic trim from the side sills to the roof rails to blend the modern with the classic. Interior space prioritizes the front passengers, but the rear seats get their own doors as well – not unlike the Mazda RX-8, we'd surmise, but with more conventional portals. Going back 110 years, Daihatsu is one of the world's oldest manufacturers of internal-combustion engines. But that doesn't mean it can't look towards the future, like it has with these two new concepts. Set to be unveiled at the Indonesia International Auto Show in Jakarta this weekend are the Daihatsu DN Multisix and the DN F-Sedan. The Japanese automaker (now wholly owned by Toyota) has given us very little to go on – just a couple of photos and few details – but the show cars clearly demonstrate a new design language for the brand. The DN Multisix is ostensibly a six-passenger minivan (or MPV as they're often called overseas) with more of a crossover look – but nothing like the Chevy Uplander and Pontiac Montana with which GM tried to make the minivan relevant to sport-ute buyers a decade ago.
