Hyundai has uncovered its new generation 2020 Sonata a little over a month before it celebrates its formal world premiere at the 2019 New York Auto Show on April 19. Penned from a clean sheet, the eighth generation of Hyundai’s mid-size sedan marks a return to a more sporty, four-door coupe body style akin to the sixth generation model from 2009. It’s the first production model to embody the Korean brand’s new design mantra dubbed Sensuous Sportiness design that was previewed by last year’s Le Fil Rouge concept (HDC-1) and which to some extent, hinted at the new Sonata. “Sonata celebrates innovative coupe-like silhouette,” said Sang Yup Lee, senior vice president and head of the Hyundai Design Center. “A short overhang, sloping roofline and low deck lid create a balanced feel, and Hyundai’s signature chrome accent now goes all the way into the hood, making it look even longer. It also has LED lighting built in. These cues bring the Sensuous Sportiness design to life.” ...

Hyundai has unveiled the facelifted 2018 Sonata at the New York Auto Show. Looking virtually identical to the Korean model which was introduced last month, the North American variant has a sportier front fascia with a larger grille that is flanked by LED-infused headlights. The refreshened styling continues further back as customers will find restyled taillights, new alloy wheels, and a rear Hyundai badge that doubles as a trunk release button. The Sonata Sport and Sonata 2.0T go one step further as they are distinguished by a mesh grille, unique bumpers, and gloss black window trim. The cabin invokes a sense of déjà vu but the company has added a revised instrument cluster, a new three-spoke steering wheel, and an updated center stack with new switchgear. After a number of sketches, the updated Hyundai Sonata has officially launched in Seoul, South Korea. The facelifted Sonata will debut in U.S-spec at the New York Auto Show in April and is expected to look identical to the car pictured. Overall, the new car adopts a much sharper and more aggressive outward appearance and also includes some interior refinements, updated safety features and a range of engines. At the front, the new Sonata clearly incorporates the company's latest design language with an edgy grille, vertical LED daytime running lights, a set of narrow headlights and a sculpted hood. Elsewhere, the 2018 car receives more dynamic sides with subtle yet eye-catching body lines that frame the car nicely. Hyundai may have updated the Sonata for the 2017MY, but a facelifted version is coming to replace the 3-year old car. Previewed by a handful of design sketches that were posted on one of the brand's social media channels, it will get the brand's new 'cascading' grille and reshaped LED DRLs, just like the new i30, alongside a cleaner-looking and sportier rear end with LED taillight inserts. Citing sources within the company, HyundaiBlog states that the tweaked Sonata will come in two trim levels: the standard one and the sportier turbo. Details surrounding the latter have yet to be announced, but the Koreans could either boost or replace the current unit with a newer one producing more than the current 2.0-liter turbo's 245 hp. Hyundai just rolled out the current  Sonata  about three years ago. That might not seem like very long, but in a market segment as competitive as mass-market, mid-size sedans, that's long enough for one model to go stale. So the Korean automaker is apparently planning to roll out a mid-cycle facelift for the Sonata, and here we have our first glimpse at what to expect. Spied undergoing cold-weather testing, this prototype is still quite heavily camouflaged. But it appears that the refresh will revolve principally around the front- and rear-end styling, so we're told to expect new light graphics and bumpers at both ends, and a fresh grille on the snout.
