BMW took the wraps off the sporty i4 M50 today. The marriage of the i and M subbrands, the car will be the first electric M car ever produced. Well, at least according to the German automaker, as to our ears it sounds more like an M Performance recipe than a thoroughbred M model. Finished in Frozen Portimao Blue and featuring blacked-out trim and carbon fiber add ons, the 2022 BMW i4 M50 promises to bring the visual flair and aggression of the M brand into the brand’s electric future. To ensure it can keep up with the rest of the M lineup, it will offer a combined output of 536 horsepower (544 PS) and 586 lb-ft of torque from its two electric motors, including a 255hp front and 308hp rear motor, controlled by a single speed transmission. However, note that those peak figures are achieved momentarily through a Sport Boost function that increases the system’s combined drive power by 67 hp and torque by 48 lb-ft for a little over 10 seconds. The new BMW i4 has been revealed in full production form, following the carmaker’s 2021 Media Day event. BMW promised that their new all-electric four-door coupe was going to be 85 percent close to last year’s concept and they delivered on that promise. As expected, the new BMW i4 adopts the same front-end treatment as the iX, featuring a grille-like pair of big kidneys that act as a cover for the vehicle’s numerous sensors. Unlike the iX, this is probably going to be the model’s only controversial feature as the rest of the body avoids any design experiments, opting instead for the classic four-door coupe proportions. “With its sporty looks, best in class driving dynamics, and zero local emissions, the BMW i4 is a true BMW. The veil has just been lifted on the BMW Concept i4 after a recent leak, previewing the production-ready i4 slated to reach the production line in 2021. Found at the heart of the Concept i4 is the company’s fifth-generation eDrive technology also set to be introduced by the iNext and iX3. Power is provided by an electric motor delivering a total of 530 hp and paired with a high-voltage battery pack using the marque’s latest battery cell technology. Capacity for the battery sits at around 80 kWh, allowing the vehicle to travel 372 miles (600 km) on a single charge across the WLTP cycle. The exterior design of the Concept i4 is thought to be quite representative of what the road-going model will look like. BMW has used the Geneva Motor Show to announce plans to offer an all-new i4. Previewed by the i Vision Dynamics concept, the production model will be an electric vehicle that is built in Munich, Germany. BMW declined to say when the model will go into production but the i4 will be one of 25 electrified vehicles the company intends to launch by 2025. It will be joined by 11 other battery-electric models including the iX3 and MINI EV. While BMW was light on specifics, the i Vision Dynamics concept debuted at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show with an electric powertrain which enabled the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in four seconds before hitting a top speed in excess of 200 km/h (120 mph). The concept could also travel up to 600 km (373 miles) on a single charge which is pretty impressive considering the Tesla Model S has a range of 539 km (335 miles).
