Geely Preface Concept Dresses Volvo Platform In A Stylish Suit

Image
Geely is giving us a look into the future with their new Preface concept. Billed as the brand’s “first high-end sporty sedan,” the Preface features an evolution of their Expanding Cosmos design language and previews several new vehicles that will be launched over the course of the next two years. Geely, which owns Volvo Cars since 2010, didn’t say much about the production models, but they will be upscale and “globally orientated.” Getting back to the concept itself, the Preface has a stylish front fascia with a prominent grille that is wider and taller than ever before. The grille also features vertical black slates which were added to give the appearance of a floating Geely logo. On either side of the grille are slender LED headlights and stylish air intakes. The model has also been equipped with a sculpted hood and streamlined bodywork. The clamshell doors are particularly interesting as they feature frameless windows and flush-mounted door handles. Other notable st...

First Official Look At Geely’s Coupe SUV Codenamed FY11

Image
Geely has released official uncensored photos of its first coupe SUV, codenamed FY11. There was no point in trying to keep the car hidden following last week’s leaked photos that showed the car in full so Geely dropped the curtain on the coupe SUV. The photos bring no surprises compared to what we saw last week, however. The FY11 still looks like a generic coupe SUV heavily inspired by the BMW X4 but dismissing it as unattractive would be rather unfair. It’s not original, that’s for sure, but very few new cars are like that nowadays. The FY11 will be Geely’s third vehicle to launch this year, in addition to the all-electric sedan teased earlier this month and an all-new MPV. The coupe SUV will also be Geely’s first model based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) that was jointly developed with Volvo Cars in Sweden. According to the Chinese carmaker, the use of this platform has allowed the creation of a vehicle with “true sporting credentials, from powertrain to desig...

Geely Teases New Global Electric Sedan Ahead Of Q1 2019 Launch

Image
As GAC prepares to unveil the Entranze electric concept in Detroit, Geely teases us with an all-new electric sedan. It won’t be on display at the Detroit Auto Show but will be fully unveiled in early 2019, showcasing the brand’s “new electric design language.” The only teaser image released by the automaker isn’t too revealing but it does allow us to spot a pair of elongated headlights that span half the length of the front fenders. Integrating LED DRLs and three paralleled light bars, the headlamps are designed around the concept of “Yi,” the Chinese word for one. Other design details that stand out include the lack of a front upper grille and the sloping roofline. The Chinese carmaker says the aerodynamically-shaped EV has a wind drag coefficient of 0.2375 which is pretty good by current standards, allowing for efficient use of energy. To further enhance efficiency, the door handles are integrated into the bodywork and only appear when the driver is within a certain range. ...

Geely Introduces The New Icon Concept And Borui GE Plug-In Hybrid

Image
Geely has taken the wraps of the new Icon concept which is meant to showcase the brand’s styling chops as well as their commitment to new energy vehicles. Reportedly based on the same platform that underpins the Volvo XC40, the Icon concept is a compact crossover which features slender head- and taillights which are “inspired by infinity symbols” as they “gradually disappear into the body and make people think of infinite possibilities.” We’re not so sure about that but the crossover also has a ventilated hood, plastic body cladding and aerodynamic wheels. While the windscreen and roof echo the Range Rover Evoque, the Icon features distinctive bodywork and suicide rear doors which open to reveal a stylish cabin. Speaking of the interior, Geely says the model has a “minimalist design” which maximizes interior space. Drivers sit behind a two-spoke steering wheel and an upholstered dashboard which apparently has driving information projected onto it. To the r...

Geely SL Compact Sedan Leaked In China

Image
After seeing the new SX11 subcompact crossover recently, another vehicle made by Geely has been brought forward – the SL. Despite sharing its name with the famous roadster made by Mercedes-Benz, it’s nothing more than a compact sedan, aimed exclusively at the Chinese market. The images, shared by AutoHome, reveal a design similar to other new products that come from Volvo’s parent company. It has the same specific grille at the front, angular headlights, twin exhaust pipes, and slim taillights that are joined together by a piece of chrome, with the automaker’s name written on it. Our Chinese is a little rusty, even with Google Translate’s help, but CarNewsChina claims that the new Geely SL is 4,680mm (184.3in) long, 1,785mm (70.3in) wide, and 1,460mm (57.5in) tall, with a 2,670mm (105.1in) wheelbase. This places it between two other vehicles made for the Asian country, the Emgrand GL and Borui. When it goes on sale locally, in the second half of the year, the compact seda...

New Geely SX11 SUV Has Sporty Styling With A Floating Roof

Image
Geely’s upcoming B-Segment crossover is expected to debut during this year’s Beijing Auto Show in April, with a choice of two small turbocharged petrol engines. These images were uncovered by Chinese portal Autohome, and show what looks like a surprisingly sporty exterior, with angular design elements, an aggressive front bumper, wheel arch bulges, a blacked-out rear pillar design that leads to a floating roof aesthetic, a tailgate spoiler, dual exhaust tips, and a full-width chrome trim piece uniting the taillights. Coming in at 4,330 mm (170.4 in) in length, 1,800 mm (70.8 in) in width and 1,609 mm (63.3 in) in height, and with a wheelbase measuring 2,600 mm (102.3 in), the SX11 is slightly longer, wider and taller than a Honda HR-V, nearly matching the latter’s wheelbase length, which sits at 2,610 mm (102.7 in). The new SUV is also believed to feature three different wheel sizes (16,17 and 18-inches), adaptive cruise control, a panoramic camera, panoramic sunroof and mo...

Volvo Parent Geely Is Buying Lotus (And Part Of Proton)

Image
Chinese automaker Geely is expanding its portfolio. Not only does it produce cars under its own name, but it also owns Volvo, the London Taxi Company, and is in the process of launching the new Lynk & Co brand. And now it's bringing another couple of brands under its vast umbrella. Under a new deal announced today, Geely will acquire nearly half of DRB-HICOM's stake in Malaysian automaker Proton, and a majority of its ownership in British sports car manufacturer Lotus. The final terms are still being ironed out, and aren't expected to be announced until July. Unclear at the moment is whether Geely will be getting only half of the shares that DRB-HICOM holds in Proton and Lotus, or of the automakers altogether. However the arrangement looks poised to put Lotus under new ownership for the fifth time in the past three decades or so. The company founded by Colin Chapman became part of General Motors in 1986, was acquired by Romano Artioli of Bugatti fame in 1993, a...

Geely's MPV Concept Doesn't Look Half Bad

Image
Geely has just presented its MPV Concept in Shanghai and as yesterday’s teaser image suggested, it looks quite attractive. The design of the Geely MPV somewhat reminds of Mazda’s eye-catching Nagare design language from the mid-2000s, particularly at the front end where the lower grille incorporates curved strakes and bold lines. We can also see a bit of Kia in the front grille but overall, it is a very distinctive design and certainly one of the most impressive MPV’s we’ve laid eyes on. At the sides, the MPV concept ditches traditional wing mirrors in favour of small cameras and has a strong character line running from the front of the doors through to the taillights. The B-, C- and D-pillars have also been blackened out to give the impressive of a floating roof which itself is made almost entirely from glass. The rear of the concept is certainly head turning as well and includes thin, horizontal taillights and sophisticated lines. Of the interior shots available, we can also...

Geely's New MPV Concept Gets Teased Before Shanghai

Image
Prior to the Shanghai Auto Show kicking off, Chinese carmaker Geely has previewed its new MPV concept. Few details about the vehicle are available at this early stage but the teaser shows that Geely’s first attempt at a people-mover will consist of a seriously lengthy vehicle that promises to not only be practical but also quite pleasing to the eye. Among the obvious design elements visible are both short front and rear overhangs, a set of headlights with incorporated LED daytime running lights and B- and C-pillars that appear to seamlessly be integrated into the windows. Geely’s plans for the concept aren’t yet known but if it receives a positive reception, it could hit the Chinese market in the next few years. Carscoops

Geely's Newborn Lynk & Co Launches Volvo-Based 01 Compact SUV To Conquer The US & Europe

Image
The first model from  Geely's  newly-born Lynk & Co brand has just been unveiled in the form of the 01 compact SUV. The Lynk & Co 01 will be manufactured in China, but Geely says it will be sold in high volumes in Europe and the United States. Interestingly, it not only shares its underpinnings with the  upcoming Volvo XC40, but  the 01 has actually been designed and engineered in Sweden as well. Lynk & Co  claims that the 01 is the world's most connected car. As such, the model will always be connected to the internet and the cloud and once it hits the market, feature an open application programming interface which will allow developers to add their own ideas to the car. Additionally, owners will be able to share their 01 with others when they don't need it and have the ability to monitor their car from a smartphone.  While it has been confirmed that the 01 will feature the same modular architecture as the upcoming XC40, no engine details ha...

Geely's Lynk & Co Teases Mysterious First Model

Image
Lynk & Co, the mysterious  mobility company  from Geely, the parent company of Volvo, has released two teaser images of its first model ahead of a world debut on October 20. Details about the model are limited but it is thought to be  based around Volvo's  Compact Modular Architecture and based on these teasers, appears to be a small crossover. At the front, we can see a high fascia with a bulging headlight looking somewhat familiar to those of the Alfa Romeo 4C.  The rear end then appears to be sporting a small roof-mounted lip spoiler and a steeply raked window. While details about the vehicle's design are hard to pinpoint, the  company  itself has ambitious targets for the car, calling it “the most connected car to date” that will help push Lynk & Co to “the limits of the car industry”. According to Lynk & Co senior vice president Alain Visser, “In the car industry, for a century we have been so preoccupied by refining our product and...
