Following a very revealing leak last night, McLaren has officially pulled the wraps off the new Speedtail, which is the closest we’ll get to a modern interpretation of the legendary F1. The new McLaren Speedtail represents the next chapter in the brand’s Ultimate Series, featuring a top speed of 250mph (403km/h), courtesy of a new hybrid powertrain that produces a combined 1,036hp (1,050PS). McLaren hasn’t revealed yet the full technical specifications of the Speedtail’s petrol-electric powertrain but the company did reveal that it sets a new benchmark for the company when it comes to straight-line acceleration; 0-186mph (300km/h) comes in 12.8 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the much more powerful Bugatti Chiron (13.1 seconds). But we won’t have to wait much longer to see it, and see what it’ll do, because the British racing team turned supercar manufacturer has announced it will unveil the highly anticipated McLaren Speedtail on October 23. That’s when we’ll get to see the complete shape and delve into the details that will comprise the next chapter in Woking’s Ultimate Series, which follows the acclaimed P1 and Senna. Only unlike those singularly performance-focused exotics, the Speedtail has been designed as a “hyper-GT,” with an emphasis on covering ground with as much comfort as speed. So, what will it do? McLaren hasn’t said much about the Speedtail lately, but that’s changing today as CEO Mike Flewitt has confirmed the model will have more than 987 hp (736 kW / 1000 PS). Speaking at a McLaren owner’s event attended by Top Gear, Flewitt said the car will use a familiar engine architecture. The publication believes this is a subtle hint that the model will be powered by the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that resides in 720S. While the engine ‘only’ produces 710 hp (530 kW / 720 PS) in the Super Series variant, the Speedtail is a member of the Ultimate Series and McLaren has already confirmed the car will have a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. Flewitt talked a little but more about the hybrid system during the owner’s meeting and said the model will have use a “slightly different hybrid application” than the P1. McLaren has revealed the official name of their next Ultimate Series hypercar, which will be called Speedtail. Previously codenamed BP23, it will use a hybrid powertrain, combining a petrol engine, probably an upgraded version of the 720S’ twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, with at least one electric motor. The British car company says the new McLaren Speedtail will be able to exceed the peak speed of the legendary F1 of 391km/h (243mph). It will also be the “fastest-ever” McLaren “in a straight line”, according to the automaker, and “the most luxurious” one. Specs have yet to be released, but the Hyper-GT will eclipse not only the iconic F1, but the P1, too, which goes to 100km/h (62mph) in 2.8 seconds and has a top speed electronically capped at 350km/h (217mph).
