Cadillac doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to halo vehicles as both the ELR and XLR failed to catch on with consumers. Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen is apparently undeterred as he used the 2018 Automotive Forum in New York to confirm the automaker is working on a new halo model which will “stun the world.” The executive asked people to be patient as he can’t talk specifics yet but the company has released a handful of high-profile concepts over the past few years including the Ciel, Elmiraj and Escala. The latter concept’s styling was recently applied to the 2019 CT6 V-Sport which will be unveiled at the New York Auto Show later this week. While de Nysschen wasn’t ready to go into details, he said “I do not think the world needs yet another large, three box conventional sedan.” He went on to say such models are in a “segment we used to own” but the market is now occupied by vehicles such as the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class. The FIA Formula E Championship has now officially kicked off its fourth season. And all the while, it’s used the same essential chassis first revealed back in 2013. But that’s about to come to an end as the electric racing series is preparing to unveil a completely new second-generation car. The all-new Formula E racer is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show this coming March. But before it does, the organizers have released a trio of teaser images to keep fans of the series on their proverbial toes. Two of those teaser images give us glimpses at the front- and rear-end aerodynamic elements that look far more aggressive and angular than the current ones… especially that sinister-looking rear diffuser. Looks aside, they’ve surely been designed in the wind-tunnel to improve the spectacle and action, whether that means more downforce or less. The FIA has confirmed that the controversial halo cockpit protection will be introduced for the 2018 season. The decision comes just days after Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel tested the shield during practice at the British Grand Prix and said it made him feel dizzy. SkySports reports that a meeting of F1’s Strategy Group was held on Wednesday when the final decision was made. It is reported that most of the sport’s teams voted against the implementation of the halo but that the FIA is pushing ahead with the plan on safety grounds. In a statement, the FIA said “Following the unanimous agreement of the Strategy Group, in July 2016, to introduce additional frontal protection for Formula 1 and the repeated support from the drivers, the FIA confirms the introduction of the Halo for 2018. “Having developed and evaluated a large number of devices over the past five years, it had become clear that the Halo presents the best overall safety performance."
