Mercedes-Benz has spread out its mid-cycle facelift for the E-Class with the presentation of the 2021 sedan, wagon and All Terrain Wagon in March this year being followed today by the unveiling of the long teased Coupe and Convertible models in both regular and E53 AMG forms. It’s nothing groundbreaking with the revised two-door variants sporting minor exterior and interior styling tweaks, new technologies and updated powertrain offerings. Mercedes has a good thing going with the E-Class Coupe and Convertible, as admittedly, both are some of the most elegant looking proposals in the market. As such, there was no reason to ruin a successful formula with deep styling cuts. The most noticeable changes are the newly shaped grille and crispier light treatments on both ends, with the nose looking more upright this time around. The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E53 has been unveiled in both sedan and Wagon bodystyles alongside the latest facelifted E-Class and E-Class All-Terrain. Unlike the All-Terrain, the E53 Wagon might not be coming Stateside. Slotting under the E63, which has yet to be uncovered in its latest form, the E53 soldiers on with the same 48v mild-hybrid powertrain as the outgoing model, which replaced the old E43 two years ago. Power comes from a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, which develops 435 PS (429 HP / 320 kW) and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque. The EQ Boost starter-alternator adds an extra 22 PS (21 HP / 16 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of electric power under certain circumstances, bringing the numbers temporarily up to 457 PS (451 HP / 336 kW) and 770 Nm (568 lb-ft). Mercedes-AMG has revealed the new 53-Series models of the CLS, E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet in full, introducing not only a new model designation but the first AMG models to feature electrification as well. The highlight of the new models is of course their powertrain, which is comprised of a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 435hp and 383lb-ft (520Nm) of torque paired to an EQ Boost starter-alternator that can momentarily provide an additional 21hp (16kW) and 184lb-ft (250Nm) of torque. The EQ Boost starter-alternator also feeds the vehicle’s 48-volt electrical system. A nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT 9G automatic transmission sends the power to AMG’s fully variable Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system. AMG has fitted the new straight-six engine with one regular turbocharger and one electric auxiliary compressor while the EQ Boost unit is mounted between the engine and transmission.
