Huawei Mate 40 Pro, Pro+ and RS unveiled with 5nm chipsets, amazing camera setups

Image
The Mate 40 Pro models are finally official and they were well worth the wait. They will try to muscle their way to top of “best camera” charts with their revised hardware co-developed with Leica. But other elements of the phones have received arguably even bigger upgrades. Still, we want to start with the camera on the Huawei Mate 40 Pro 5G. Huawei has a new 1/1.28” main sensor, which along with the P40 models is the largest on the market. However, resolution has been increased to 50MP (up from 40MP) while maintaining the omnidirectional autofocus and f/1.9 lens with optical image stabilization (OIS). The pixel size is 1.22µ, which doubles when binning is enabled. The main camera is capable of shooting 4K video at 60 fps as well as slow motion clips at 1080p resolution and 480 fps. And you can practically stop time with 3,840 fps mode, which records at 720p resolution. The selfie camera is quite adept at video capture too, it can do 4K/60 videos and 1080p/240 slow-mo clips, but we’ll ...

Huawei nova 7, 7 SE and 7 Pro debut with 64MP cameras and 5G

Image
After several weeks of leaks and speculations, Huawei officially took the wraps off its nova 7 series comprising of three devices – the nova 7 Pro, nova 7 and nova 7 SE. All three phones come with 5G connectivity, 64MP main cameras and 4,000 mAh batteries with 40W fast charging. The main differences come in the displays and chipsets where the nova 7 and 7 Pro pack the Kirin 985 while the 7 SE relies on the Kirin 820. Nova 7 Pro The Huawei nova 7 Pro 5G is built around a curved 6.57 OLED display with FHD+ resolution and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The panel features a dual punch hole cutout for the 32MP and 8MP selfie cameras and a built-in fingerprint scanner. Around the back, we find a 1/1.7” 64MP main shooter, alongside an 8MP ultrawide snapper and an 8MP periscope module with OIS capable of 5X optical and up to 50X hybrid zoom. The fourth module is a 2MP macro shooter. The Kirin 985 chipset sits at the helm, aided by 8GB RAM and 128/256GB storage. There’s also a 4,000 mAh b...

The Huawei P40 Pro+ ups the ante with two telephoto cameras and 40W wireless charging

Image
The Huawei P40 Pro+ is the Pro model dialed up to 11. The biggest improvement is to the zoom cameras (yes, plural), but Huawei also hit a new benchmark in wireless charging. The plus model uses a periscope lens with a focal length of 240mm, almost twice as long as the one on the P40 Pro (125mm). It's backed by an 8MP image sensor and feature OIS. That's the longest lens on mobile yet, but Huawei had to craft a unique design to achieve it. The Pro+ has an additional telephoto camera - 80mm lens - to bridge the gap between the extreme telephoto and the regular camera. This gives you more flexibility and allows you to capture high-quality photos at various distances. The P40 Pro+ is the first phone to achieve 40W wireless charging. We've seen prototypes from competitors, but Huawei is the first to make it official. Wired charging for the 4,200mAh battery is 40W. Reverse wireless charging is supported, of course. The phone uses the same Kirin 990 5G chipset wit...

Huawei P40 unveiled with 50MP camera, P40 Pro adds 90Hz panel, 5x tele cam

Image
It's that time of the year again - Huawei and its partner Leica are starting a new chapter in smartphone photography. The smartphone manufacturer also did much to improve the hardware on the front of its P40 flagships and it hit a new milestone in wireless charging speeds. Huawei P40 Pro The Huawei P40 Pro takes inspiration from both the P30 and Mate 30, but surpasses them both in terms of features. Huawei's usual drive to perfect the camera is as strong as ever, but this year the company did much to improve the screen as well. It calls it an "Overflow Display" with four curved edges, all sides sweeping down to the frame of the phone. Another notable change is move away from the wide notch and towards a smaller (if not really "small") pill-shaped punch hole. It houses the 32MP front camera (capable of 4K @ 60fps video capture), which finally has autofocus - we think that's vital for good quality selfies. The 6.58" OLED panel supports 9...

Huawei’s Mate X foldable phone is a thinner 5G rival to the Galaxy Fold

Image
Samsung’s Galaxy Fold announcement isn’t even a week old yet, and we already have a competitor that is thinner, has a bigger screen, and folds flatter. Say hello to the Huawei Mate X. Launching at MWC 2019, the Mate X has an 8-inch wraparound OLED display, a folded thickness of a mere 11mm, and a formidable spec sheet highlighted by 5G, a 4,500mAh battery, and Huawei’s in-house Kirin 980 processor. The single OLED display of the Mate X actually serves triple duty. When the device is folded, you essentially have a dual-screen smartphone, with the second display on the rear allowing you to shoot selfies with the main camera or to share what’s on your primary display with a person on the other side. Open up the Mate X, and you get an almost square (but not quite) tablet that has minimal bezels on three sides. One of the sides is reserved for a thicker grip section that houses the three cameras, their accompanying flash, and a push-button latch that secures the folded tablet i...

Huawei announces Nova 4 with hole-punch display and 48-megapixel camera

Image
Huawei has announced the Nova 4 smartphone after weeks of teasing its most standout feature: the circular “hole-punch” cut-out for the 25-megapixel selfie camera. Samsung beat Huawei to the punch (...) by announcing the similar Galaxy A8s last week, but Huawei’s phone looks to have a smaller hole for the camera. We’ll have to see whether that has any implications for image quality. Last week Huawei sub-brand Honor semi-announced the View 20, a phone that looks like it’ll have quite a bit in common with the Nova 4. Aside from the same hole-punch design, both phones also have 48-megapixel primary cameras on the rear. It’s part of a three-camera setup on the Nova 4, but Honor hasn’t shown off the View 20 from behind yet. Unlike the View 20, the Nova 4 is powered by the Kirin 970 processor found in the View 10 and Huawei P20 Pro; Honor’s newer phone will use the newer Kirin 980. Other Nova 4 specs include a 6.4-inch 2310 x 1080 display, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a rear-mounted f...

Honor's New Flagship Smartphone Revealed

Image
Honor, Huawei’s lower-cost sub-brand, has announced its latest flagship phone: the Honor 10. Building on the solid View 10 and taking some cues from the impressive Huawei P20, the Honor 10 is the first Honor phone to really look like a high-end 2018 device. Which is to say that yes, it has a notch. But like the P20, it also has an eye-catching iridescent finish and an all-glass body. There’s a fingerprint sensor below the screen, which is a 5.84-inch 1080p LCD with a tall aspect ratio, and the bottom edge of the phone houses a USB-C port and a headphone jack. The processor is the same AI-equipped Kirin 970 chip seen in the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, the P20, and the View 10. As for the cameras there's a 24-megapixel sensor on the front for hi-res selfies, while the rear of the phone has a 16-megapixel and 24-megapixel dual setup with f/1.6 lenses. The Honor 10 will go on sale on April 27th in China at 2599 yuan ($414) for a model with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, or 2999 yuan (...

Porsche Designs A Phone That's As Slick As It Is Powerful

Image
With the Porsche Design division, the German brand applies its aesthetic ethos to a wide variety of products. That includes a longstanding partnership with Chinese electronics manufacturer Huawei, for which it has designed the new Porsche Design Huawei Mate 10 smartphone. Clearly aimed at a higher segment of the mobile phone market, the PD Mate 10 looks as slick as they come – and boasts some serious hardware to back up its cutting-edge design. For starters, it has an Artificial Intelligence (AI) chip that optimizes everything from energy consumption to photography. It also packs 6 gigs of RAM and 256 gigs of storage to store all your favorite tracks and apps and still leave plenty of space for photos and videos captured on the device. That part is handled by optics furnished by none other than Leica – dual lenses with f/1.6 aperture, capturing 12 megapixels in color and 20 in black and white. There's a fingerprint reader on the back, and a pre-installed translator...

Huawei's Mate 10 Phones Revealed

Image
Huawei has announced the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, two new phones that occupy the highest end of its lineup. The Mate 10 phones see the Chinese giant get on board with the skinny-bezel trend of 2017 while leveraging its ability in silicon design to supposedly improve AI-related performance. The main difference between the two phones is in screen size and shape. The Mate 10 features a 5.9-inch 2560 x 1440 LCD while the Mate 10 Pro’s display is a 6-inch 2160 x 1080 OLED; both have thin, symmetrical bezels at the top and bottom. The Pro feels like the smaller phone, however, due to the narrower 18:9 aspect ratio it shares with many of this year’s similarly sized “bezel-less” phones. The regular Mate 10’s sharper 16:9 screen makes for an unusually proportioned device, albeit one that’ll probably work well for YouTube and other casual video watching — it feels very wide in the hand, but the combination of a huge, standard aspect ratio screen with slim bezels lends a distinctive ...
