Hot-hatch enthusiasts have been patiently awaiting the arrival of the Toyota Yaris GRMN. The wait will be over soon as production is set to kick off this fall, but before it does, the Japanese automaker has released its key final specifications. While output from the 1.8-liter supercharged inline-four was previously said to exceed 205 hp, it's now been confirmed at 209 – 212 on the metric scale, or 156 kW. That's coupled to 184 lb-ft of torque, all channeled to the front wheels through a six-speed manual and limited-slip differential. The 0-62 time, as a result, is estimated at 6.3 seconds, with the top speed restricted to 143 miles per hour. That's thanks in no small part to the spritely curb weight of 2,502 lbs, giving the Yaris GRMN “the best power-to-weight ratio in its class,” according to the manufacturer. Toyota has been promising for some time to release a hot hatch, and that's just what it's done at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show with the introduction of the new Yaris GRMN. Tuned by the Japanese automaker's performance division (Gazoo Racing, Masters of the Nürburgring), the hot new Yaris is envisioned as the road-going counterpart to the rally machine Toyota fields in the WRC. Toyota has confirmed that its performance-oriented variant of the Yaris hatchback will receive a 1.8-liter supercharged four-cylinder. Prior to the model’s Geneva Motor Show debut, the Japanese marque has also confirmed that it will be dubbed the Yaris GRMN, which curiously stands for ‘Gazoo Racing Masters of the Nurburgring’. Looking beyond the strange name, the engine is expected to be the real selling-point of the souped-up Yaris. Toyota’s official word is that it will produce over 205 hp meaning it should prove the perfect rival to the all-new Ford Fiesta ST, also bowing in Geneva.
