Mercedes-Benz has announced the recall of nearly half a million vehicles across the United States due to a problem with their airbags. According to the recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the driver's airbag could unexpectedly deploy under certain conditions – but only if two problems arise at the same time, and apparently owing nothing to the massive Takata recall we'd associate with this kind of problem. If the air bag clockspring is broken, and an electrostatic discharge occurs, then the airbag in the steering wheel could deploy accidentally. That doesn't strike us as a scenario likely to happen very often. But since the deployment of the airbag could be disruptive, to say the least, it's probably a good thing that Mercedes is calling in any vehicles that could be affected. After announcing plans to add a hotter AMG version to the new GLC Coupe’s range back in  June at the presentation of the series , Mercedes-Benz has formally introduced the GLC 43 4Matic Coupé. Like a number of other  43-badged cars in Mercedes-AMG’s lineup , the sporty crossover makes use of a 3.0-liter bi-turbocharged gasoline V6 that is rated for 362hp (367PS) and 383 lb-ft (520Nm) of peak torque. It’s paired to an nine-speed 9G‑TRONIC automatic with shortened shift times and the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive configured with a rear bias torque distribution (31:69).  This results in a zero to 100km/h acceleration time of 4.9 seconds (0-60mph in 4.8 sec), an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h (155mph), which coincidently, matches  BMW’s rivalling 355hp (360PS) X4 M40i , and a combined fuel economy of 8.4l/100km on the European cycle, equal to 28 mpg US and 33.6mpg UK.  To sharpen the drive, there’s a host of Mercedes-AMG improvements and upg...

Mercedes-Benz will have one of the richest stands at  this week’s New York Auto Show , with the Germans announcing one world premiere after the other, the latest one being the milder ‘43’ AMG version of their brand-new GLC Coupe. If you haven’t been following the developments over at Mercedes lately, their short lived AMG Sport designation that was created to take the fight Audi's S Quattro and BMW's M-Performance lineups has been  replaced with the AMG ‘43’ moniker. Teased here in a sketch is the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe, as evidenced by the signature diamond radiator grille with chrome pins and gloss black louvers found in other ‘43’ AMG models, instead of the honeycomb background on the  fully-fledged AMG ‘63’ models’ . It used to be simple. If you wanted a sporty, compact luxury  CUV , you ran out and bought the excellent  Audi SQ5 . For the 2017 model year, the decision will be a lot tougher, thanks to the new Mercedes-AMG GLC43. You should be able to discern plenty about this new model based on the simple arrangement of those letters and numbers. Like the upcoming C43 (née C450  AMG ), the business end of the GLC43 hides a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 good for 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. Like the  C-Class , expect plenty of performance from the six-cylinder  engine , with  Mercedes  claiming the spicy CUV will hit 60 in 4.8 seconds and speeds up to 155 miles per hour. Both of those figures match the C450 Sedan, but the big difference between the two vehicles is how power is channeled to their standard, rear-biased 4Matic all-wheel-drive systems.
