Mercedes has a new luxury king in its range in the form of the 2021 Maybach S-Class, an ultra-posh take on the already pretty loaded S-Class primarily designed for chauffeured driving. The new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class features an 18 cm (7 inches) longer wheelbase, at 3396 mm (133.7 inches), offering an even more spacious environment for the rear passengers compared to its predecessor. There’s also an “active noise compensation” system that sends counter-phased audio signals to cancel road noise before it reaches the occupants’ ears. Depending on the market, customers will get to choose between the Mercedes-Maybach S580 4Matic, which is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 making 496 HP and has a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that provides an extra 21 HP, and the V12-powered S650, which will continue using the twin-turbo 6.0-liter unit with 621 HP, possibly combined with all-wheel-drive as well. Mercedes-Benz has been responsible for a staggering list of safety innovations. And many of those have debuted first on the S-Class. Now the top of that line is introducing a new safety technology. Implemented on certain examples of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is a new Digital Light system that’s far more advanced than any headlights we’ve seen to date. The system encompasses over a million pixels of illumination in each of the headlamps. What’s more is they can be individually controlled by the on-board computers to project specific symbols onto the road to help the driver stay on the proverbial straight and narrow. For one, the system takes the Adaptive Highbeam Assist function even further by selectively switching off individual lighting elements when a vehicle approaches in the opposite direction to avoid blinding the other driver. More customers in Europe opted for a Tesla Model S last year, with the American electric car beating traditional luxury brands like Mercedes and BMW in their home turf. While the Tesla Model S has been selling more examples than Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series in the US for some years now, the same happens for the first time in Europe, Automotive News reports. Sales of the Tesla Model S in Europe have increased by 30 percent, with 16,132 cars sold in 2017. Mercedes sold 13,359 S-Classes for the same year, an increase of 3 percent. BMW sold 11,735 7-Series models, a 13 percent decrease over 2016. In the US, Tesla’s Model S sales were up by nine percent last year to 28,800 cars, beating rivals like the Cadillac XTS (16,275 units) and the Mercedes S-Class (15,888 units). Even the Model X is gaining traction on the European sales charts, as it managed to sell 12,000 units last year, which is about the same as the Porsche Cayenne and nearly 2,000 cars more than the BMW X6. “T...

Want the ultimate luxury sedan, when even an “ordinary” Mercedes-Benz S-Class won’t do? The Maybach version may be just the ticket. And now Mercedes has luxed it up even further. Set to debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show next month, the updated Mercedes-Maybach S-Class gets a restyled grille, two-tone paint options, a fresh set of wheels, and additional interior treatments. That new grille is inspired by pinstripe suits, and draws from the nose on the rather stunning Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 coupe concept that debuted at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in the summer of 2016. Joining the ‘standard’ 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet models at Frankfurt will be the refreshed AMG S63 Coupe and Cabriolet and AMG S65 Coupe and Cabriolet. Most importantly, the facelifted S63 models ditch Mercedes-AMG’s twin-turbo 5.5-liter in favor of the latest 4.0-liter biturbo V8 with 603 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. This new engine is mated to the AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission and a variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ transmission, allowing the new S63 Coupe and Cabriolet to reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in a blistering 3.4 seconds. Top speed of both models sits at a limited 186 mph (300 km/h). The S63 Coupe also incorporates the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation system which deactivates cylinders two, three, five and eight when they’re not needed.
