We’ve become accustomed by now to watching races broadcast from the Middle East. World-class racing series like F1 and MotoGP regularly hold events in Gulf emirates like Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Bahrain. But the latest announcement is a little different. The organizers of the FIA Formula E Championship have announced that, starting next season, the electric racing series will compete on the streets of Riyadh. The first event is set to kick off the start of next season, when an entirely new generation of single-seat EVs will race through the Ad Diriyah district in the Saudi Arabian capital. But it won’t be a flash in the pan, as the initial deal has been penned for a full ten years. The announcement follows just a few months after the Race of Champions was held in the same city’s King Fahd International Stadium. A number of IndyCar A-listers are among the first drivers confirmed for the 2018 Race Of Champions, set to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on February 2-3 2018. The likes of reigning Verizon IndyCar Series champion Josef Newgarden, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Helio Castroneves, and Juan Pablo Montoya have all been confirmed for the annual event. Montoya, who won the event in his first appearance back in January, says he is excited to return. “When I came to the Race Of Champions for the first time this year, I immediately regretted never having done it before. It was an amazing experience and (ROC president) Fredrik Johnsson and his team put together an amazing event. It’s all about fun, but when you go to the grid it’s unbelievable how focused you are.” A host of other drivers from the likes of Formula 1, NASCAR, rallycross and other motorsport series’ will be announced in the coming weeks. The Race Of Champions will be held in Saudi Arabia in early 2018 and become the first international motorsport event ever held in the country. The event will take place at King Fahd International Stadium in the capital city of Riyadh. As with every other iteration of the event, accomplished racing drivers from around the world will compete to be crowned the Champion of Champions. In a statement, organizers of the Race Of Champions said the event would be family friendly and meet the cultural standards of Saudi Arabia. “Further details, driver announcements and exact dates for ROC’s Saudi Arabian debut will be announced shortly, but the General Sports Authority has confirmed that Race Of Champions will be a family event, open to both genders and feature drivers, exhibitions and activities all suitable for the Kingdom’s specific cultural requirements.” Carscoops
