Rolls Royce has pulled the covers off the new Cullinan, the brand’s first-ever SUV and at the same time the world’s first super-luxury crossover. The name Cullinan comes after the largest diamond ever discovered, which now is part of the British Crown Jewels. Rolls Royce describes the Cullinan as an ‘all-terrain, high-bodied car that makes the idea of authentic, luxury off-road travel a reality for the first time’. After all, it was the customers who asked the British car maker to build the Rolls-Royce of SUVs. The new Rolls Royce Cullinan is the second model to be based on the new aluminum ‘Architecture of Luxury’ platform, after the latest Phantom. Under the bonnet sits a reworked twin-turbo 6.75-liter V12 engine that makes 563hp (571PS) and more importantly 627lb-ft (850Nm) of peak torque from just 1,600rpm. The world’s most luxurious crossover will be unveiled on May 10th as Rolls-Royce has confirmed the Cullinan will celebrate its world debut this Thursday at 7:00 am EDT. But before we see the first ever SUV from Rolls Royce in full, the British company will perform a tease,  releasing undisguised details of the posh crossover over the next few days, starting with a glimpse of the taillights today. The company is staying tight-lipped about specifics but the Cullinan will follow in the footsteps of the Phantom and adopt a familiar front fascia with a prominent grille that is flanked by rectangular headlights. The Cullinan also has strong shoulder lines, suicide rear doors and a dual exhaust system. Rounding out the exterior styling features are Phantom-like taillights and a tailgate-mounted spoiler. For the past year or so, we’ve been watching Rolls-Royce working on its new crossover under the handle Project Cullinan. Then, a couple of months ago, we brought you reports that the finished product would wear another name once it reached production. Now the automaker has confirmed that its forthcoming sport-utility vehicle will indeed be called Cullinan. The name is borrowed from a diamond – the largest ever discovered – unearthed in South Africa in 1905 (the year before Rolls-Royce was founded). “The name Cullinan has been hiding in plain sight since we revealed it as the project name some years ago,” said Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös. “It is the most fitting name for our extraordinary new product.
