Record-breaking Manchester United claim historic title

Image
The set is complete. They’ve done it all. They have every one of them in the cabinet. After 14 matches and more than 14,358 air miles, Manchester United are Europa League champions. They’ve won everything there is to win. The Red Devils now stand alongside Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus and Wednesday’s opponents Ajax as the only clubs to have won the UEFA Cup/Europa League, Champions League/European Cup & Cup-Winners’ Cup. And it was fitting that substitute Wayne Rooney lifted the mammoth trophy in Stockholm following their 2-0 defeat of Ajax on Wednesday, in what could be his last appearance for the club.  Man Utd’s and England’s all-time top scorer lifted the club’s 42nd trophy, making them the most decorated side in English football history. 31-year-old Rooney’s late substitute appearance was his fourth appearance in a major European final for the club, equaling the record held by Ryan Giggs. It was also fitting that the most expensive footballer in history ...

Barcelona Legends to take on Manchester United in June charity match

Image
Barcelona have announced that their Legends team will make their home debut in a charity match against Manchester United on June 30, 2017. The Catalans had hoped for the encounter to take place last summer, but because of a clash with Euro 2016 the event was postponed as so many players had professional duties to undertake in France. However, with the summer footballing calendar clear, the event will take place at Camp Nou with a 19:00 kick off, while a return fixture will be played at Old Trafford on September 2. The proceeds of the Spain leg will go to the FC Barcelona Foundation, which helps primarily children take part in social, cultural and sporting activities. This encounter will be the second that the Barcelona Legends side have played. On April 1, they made their debut against a team of ex-Mexico stars in Queretaro. They were managed by Jose Mari Bakero and their XI contained luminaries such as Ronald de Boer, Edmilson, Vitor Baia and Hristo Stoichkov. Barca hope...

Jose Mourinho pays tribute to Claudio Ranieri with initials on shirt as he slams Leicester players after sacking

Image
Jose Mourinho has condemned Leicester's 'selfish' players for letting down Claudio Ranieri after he was sacked just nine months on from lifting the Premier League title. Mourinho turned up for his press conference with the initials 'CR' printed on his training top in dedication to Ranieri after posting a picture of them together on social media. The Portuguese coach was also sacked the season after a title win — by Chelsea in December 2015 — but said that was 'peanuts' compared to the way Ranieri has been treated by Leicester. And Mourinho saved his most scathing criticism for the players who are understood to have turned against the Italian. 'If some of the stories are true, it's hard to find words to justify it,' he said. 'As managers we have to cope with that. 'Probably the season started with the typical selfishness of others, people thinking about new contracts, leaving, more money, forgetting who helped them to reach a ...

Liverpool and Manchester United issue warning to fans

Image
Few football matches can claim to draw a bigger audience. An estimated 700 million people -- nearly 10% of the world's population -- in over 200 countries are expected to tune in when Liverpool hosts Manchester United in the Premier League Monday. But the lucky 54,000 fans attending the match at Anfield have been warned to be on their best behavior. Unsavory songs by both sets of fans have been sung about tragedies in the clubs' pasts, Liverpool's Hillsborough disaster and Manchester United's air crash. Last season, before the two sides met in the Europa League, a banner that read "murderers" -- in reference to the Heysel tragedy involving Liverpool -- was hung above a major road leading into Manchester. "If any supporters are found to be engaged in any form of offensive or discriminatory behavior by stewards or via CCTV then they will be immediately removed from the stadium, risk arrest, prosecution and be reported in accordance with ...
