This year’s Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance will host an all-new Ultimate Series McLaren model, a yet-unnamed two-seat, open cockpit roadster. The British automaker says that the new model will debut in late 2020 and that production will be limited to just 399 cars. Meanwhile, its price tag should see it positioned somewhere between the McLaren Senna ($958,966) and the Speedtail (£2.1 million GBP). McLaren has revealed the official name of their next Ultimate Series hypercar, which will be called Speedtail. Previously codenamed BP23, it will use a hybrid powertrain, combining a petrol engine, probably an upgraded version of the 720S’ twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, with at least one electric motor. The British car company says the new McLaren Speedtail will be able to exceed the peak speed of the legendary F1 of 391km/h (243mph). It will also be the “fastest-ever” McLaren “in a straight line”, according to the automaker, and “the most luxurious” one. Specs have yet to be released, but the Hyper-GT will eclipse not only the iconic F1, but the P1, too, which goes to 100km/h (62mph) in 2.8 seconds and has a top speed electronically capped at 350km/h (217mph). At Goodwood, McLaren has announced its new Track25 business plan, aimed at taking the British automaker well into the next decade. Among the milestones set by the Track25 roadmap is to ensure that McLaren’s entire sports car and supercar range will feature hybrid power within the next seven years, among them a new Ultimate Series that will succeed the petrol-electric P1. McLaren will also evaluate new augmented driving features in order to develop a lighter, superfast-charging, high-power battery system for performance applications, expected to offer more than 30 minutes of electric range around a race track. The soon-to-open McLaren Composites Technology Center (MCTC) will be where the automaker will develop and manufacture lightweight technology. Ever since production of the P1 ended, supercar enthusiasts have been wondering what McLaren would do next to fill the void left in its flagship Ultimate Series. The answer came, in part, with the announcement of the BP23 project, although now Woking has announced another model in the pipeline, and it sounds really exciting.
