FC Barcelona Sign Ousmane Dembélé From Borussia Dortmund

Image
FC Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund have reached an agreement for the transfer of Ousmane Dembélé for 105 million euros plus add-ons. The player will sign a five year contract and his buy out-clause is set at 400 million euros. Dembélé will arrive in Barcelona on Sunday and he will undergo a medical on Monday morning local time. Born in Vernon, France on 15 May 1997, Ousmane Dembélé is one of the best young players in the world. The French winger stands out for his pace, ability to beat men and versatility. He comes to FC Barcelona after having demonstrated his quality with Rennes and then Borussia Dortmund. He can play on either wing in attack and is known for his great dribbling (last season he carried 103 successful dribbles, more than anyone else in the Bundesliga). At 20 years of age he has played a total of seven games with the French national side alongside Barça players Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne. Last season Dembélé scored 10 goals in 49 matches aside from being thi...

La Liga Rejects Neymar's €222 Million Payment

Image
Neymar's world-record move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain has entered legal limbo as La Liga has rejected the €222 million payment deposited by the player's lawyer. The 25-year-old was expected to complete his move on Friday and push to play a part in PSG's Ligue 1 opener on Saturday against Amiens. However, Neymar's lawyer Juan de Dios Crespo had the cheque to trigger his €222m release clause rejected by the Spanish league on Thursday morning. "We can confirm Neymar legal representatives went to LaLiga to pay buyout clause and it has been rejected," La Liga said in a statement. "That's all the information we are going to give for the moment." The decision to reject the attacker's move - which looked all-but certain after he said goodbye to Barca players and staff on Wednesday and informed the club of his decision to leave - puts the transfer in a completely unprecedented situation, although the latest developments do not co...

FC Barcelona Win International Champions Cup

Image
The fifth edition of the International Champions Cup is winding to a climax after Barcelona were crowned champions with a 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid. Earlier in July they had defeated Europa League holders Manchester United 1-0 and Serie A champions Juventus 2-1. Zinedine Zidane's men conquered the Champions League and La Liga last season, but Lionel Messi and Co. got revenge with the first of at least five Clasicos in 2017-18 (two Supercopas and two league games to come). With a footprint in both Asia and the United States, the annual pre-season ICC tournament involving Europe's top clubs taps into the huge fanbases that exist for those teams outside of their local markets. It has drawn huge crowds and sees the clubs involved pocket significant appearance fees - rumoured to be worth up to $20 million - in addition to the longer-term commercial benefits of engaging with supporters across the globe. The downside is the amount of travel involved, with m...

Barcelona appoint Valverde to replace Luis Enrique

Image
Barcelona have confirmed that Ernesto Valverde will be their new coach for the 2017-18 season. The 53-year-old stepped down after four seasons in a second spell at Athletic Club last week and was widely expected to take over from Luis Enrique this summer. Barca had promised an announcement after the Copa del Rey final and a statement on Monday confirmed Valverde as the new coach on a two-year deal. "I have spoken personally with Ernesto Valverde and I told him of our decision," said club president Josep Maria Bartomeu. "He said he is very excited and very happy, that it's a great challenge to come in as head coach of Barca. "There is time to talk about why we chose him. We know he has ability, his knowledge and his experience. "He loves youth football and he has a special style, similar to what we do at Barca. He has philosophy similar to Barca's and trains the way we like to train." Luis Enrique's three-year tenure yielded nin...

Lionel Messi inspires Barcelona to Copa del Rey final triumph against Alavés

Image
Lionel Messi produced yet another masterclass as Barcelona marked the end of Luis Enrique’s Camp Nou reign by lifting the Copa del Rey. Barcelona became the first team since the early 1950s to lift the cup three seasons running as Messi masterminded a 3-1 victory at the final game to be staged at Atlético Madrid’s Vicente Calderón home. Messi set Barcelona on their way with his 54th goal of the season and Neymar and Paco Alcácer were also on target in the first half, with Theo Hernández offering Alavés brief hope with a wonderful free-kick. Alavés had waited 96 years to reach a Copa del Rey final, and they did not disgrace themselves at the end of a season in which they finished ninth in La Liga after winning promotion. But, as is so often the case, they had no answer to the brilliance of Messi and, after a season in which Barcelona have fallen short of their high standards, the favourites ended with a trophy. A ninth piece of silverware was a fitting end to Enrique’s three-...

Unstoppable Neymar scores first-ever away hat-trick for Barcelona

Image
Neymar marked a personal best in a match-winning performance against Las Palmas, as he recorded his first-ever Barcelona hat-trick away from Camp Nou. The Brazilian was lethal in front of goal on Sunday, scoring three times with a host of fine finishes to help the Catalans to a 4-1 victory in Gran Canaria. He also chipped in with a pinpoint assist to set up Luis Suarez, as Barca kept their Liga hopes alive. But it was his goalscoring exploits that caught the eye, and in scoring three he marked his best-ever away game in Barca colours. Prior to Sunday, Neymar had never managed to score a hat-trick on the road in any competition for Barca, a run he put to bed against Las Palmas. It was also just the second hat-trick scored by a Barcelona player in this Liga season; the first was netted by Luis Suarez way back on the first weekend in a 6-2 thrashing of Betis. Goal

Barcelona Legends to take on Manchester United in June charity match

Image
Barcelona have announced that their Legends team will make their home debut in a charity match against Manchester United on June 30, 2017. The Catalans had hoped for the encounter to take place last summer, but because of a clash with Euro 2016 the event was postponed as so many players had professional duties to undertake in France. However, with the summer footballing calendar clear, the event will take place at Camp Nou with a 19:00 kick off, while a return fixture will be played at Old Trafford on September 2. The proceeds of the Spain leg will go to the FC Barcelona Foundation, which helps primarily children take part in social, cultural and sporting activities. This encounter will be the second that the Barcelona Legends side have played. On April 1, they made their debut against a team of ex-Mexico stars in Queretaro. They were managed by Jose Mari Bakero and their XI contained luminaries such as Ronald de Boer, Edmilson, Vitor Baia and Hristo Stoichkov. Barca hope...
