Touring Unveils Its First Mid-Engined Car, The Ferrari-Powered Arese RH95

Image
After some teasing, we finally know what the Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera Arese RH95 will look like and what kind of performance it will have. Although Touring has not yet revealed what car the Arese RH95 is based on, its V8 engine makes the same amount of power as the twin-turbocharged Ferrari F8 Tributo: 710 hp (720 PS) at 8,000 rpm and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) of torque from 3,250 rpm, which are channeled to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The sprint from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) is handled in 3.0 seconds flat and it can run all the way up 205 mph (330 km/h). Despite being the first mid-engined car Touring has ever produced, the design does incorporate classic elements from the coachbuilder’s past. The beltline, for instance, was inspired by the Disco Coupe while the nose incorporates elements first seen on the AERO 3. The “Arese RH95 reflects the stylistic features of the entire AERO line in its many distinctive elements, and the cinematic openings of the ext...

2020 Corvette C8 Is America’s Mid-Engine Sports Car For The Masses

Image
Chevrolet has officially unveiled the 2020 Corvette Stingray. One of this year’s most highly anticipated models, the 2020 C8 is a revelation as it’s the first Corvette to adopt a mid-engine design. This decision has been decades in the making and it’s the final realization of Zora Arkus-Duntov’s dream. Looking pretty much as expected, the 2020 Corvette has an aggressive front fascia with a triangular insert that is flanked by large air intakes. A small spoiler resides below, while there’s a stylish hood and slender headlights above. The sporty styling continues further back as the car has a rakish windscreen, aerodynamic side skirts and sculpted bodywork that channels air into two massive side scoops. Other notable features include a compact greenhouse, muscular rear fenders and a double bubble roof. Continuing to the rear, there’s a ventilated engine cover with a glass window that provides a glimpse of the new V8 engine. Above the window is a camera which sends video ...

Mid-Engine 2020 Corvette C8 Officially Teased, Debuts July 18th

Image
The wait is almost over as Chevrolet has confirmed the 2020 Corvette will be unveiled this summer. The company is keeping details under wraps, but said the 2020 C8 is the “sum of each generation before it, but will stand alone as the new standard of performance.” Chevrolet is staying coy on specifics, but we already know the model will be a radical departure from its predecessor as it will have a mid-mounted 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces around 500 hp (373 kW / 507 PS). It will be connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission which sends power to the rear wheels. While the powertrain itself isn’t too revolutionary, the 2020 Corvette will adopt an all-new design as part of its switch to a mid-engine layout. The curved front fascia of the C7 will be replaced by a more aggressive setup that features an angular nose and muscular intakes. The sports car will also adopt a shorter hood as there’s no need for engine room up front. Bigger changes occur further back a...

AM-RB 003 Concept Paves The Way For Aston Martin’s Third Mid-Engined Supercar

Image
Aston Martin’s onslaught of concept car debuts continues with the AM-RB 003, the new working name for Project 003. Presented in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show, the AM-RB 003 benefits from the involvement of Red Bull Advanced Technologies (RBAT), just like the Valkyrie and Valkyrie AMR Pro. The new study will transition into a production car that will become Aston Martin’s third mid-engined model. According to CEO Andy Palmer, it will benefit from Red Bull’s involvement in its design and engineering, particularly when it comes to the chassis and aerodynamics. Aston Martin says the AM-RB 003 will incorporate concepts and technologies taken directly from Formula 1 “to meet and surpass the performance demands of existing top-end hypercar rivals.” However, the AM-RB 003 will make greater concessions to practicality and road use than the Valkyrie. For example, the new model will have a roomier cockpit allowing for more space between driver and passenger thanks to a wi...

Aston Martin Vanquish Vision Concept Is A 720S And F8 Tributo Rival

Image
This is the Aston Martin Vanquish Vision Concept, which has just been unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show and previews to British automaker’s upcoming mid-engine supercar. The new Vanquish will slot below the Valkyrie and 003 hypercars in Aston’s range and take the fight to the likes of the Ferrari F8 Tributo and McLaren 720S. Aston Martin is keeping many core details of the Vanquish Vision Concept under wraps but has confirmed that it will feature a version of the marque’s new V6 which is set to premiere in hybrid turbo form in the 003 hypercar. Limited details are known about this V6 but in order to match or exceed the 710 hp outputs of the McLaren 720S and Ferrari F8 Tributo, it will likely use some form of hybridization or twin-turbochargers. The British automaker has also announced that the Vanquish Vision Concept ditches the carbon fiber monocoque chassis of the Valkyrie and 003 and instead uses a bespoke bonded aluminum chassis. This platform will be cheaper and easier t...

2020 Mid-Engine Corvette C8: This Is It

Image
This is our first proper look at the upcoming next-generation Corvette, as a test car showed up at the Nurburgring without wearing the black covers previously applied. The car remains covered in full-body wrap but it’s the first time we get to see a lot of design details of the mid-engined Corvette. Where do we start? The front end appears really sharp and aggressive, with the bumpers giving us a Lamborghini vibe while the headlights seem to adopt a curvy L-shape that follows the lines of the bonnet. The highlight on the sides is of course that massive air scoops for the engine bay while it appears there are a few character lines present for a more muscular shape. It looks clean and dynamic, but with the camo on it’s risky to jump on conclusions. The rear end tries to throw us off with the use of Camaro taillights instead of the finished items. The rear window over the engine is accompanied by two sets of air outlets while underneath the lights there’s also anoth...

Gordon Murray's McLaren F1-Inspired Supercar To Be Launched Under The IGM Brand

Image
New details of Gordon Murray's supercar are starting to emerge, as it will be built under the revived IGM brand, which was first used in the late '60s on the designer's 'T.1' IGM Ford Special. Teased in an official image that partially reveals its mid-engined shape with soft and muscular lines, the as-of-yet-unnamed vehicle is a 50-year celebration of Gordon Murray's career. Said to be "inspired by the engineering principles of the McLaren F1", the new supercar "will be built for contemporary driving conditions featuring the very latest materials and technology". The supercar will be made using the company's iStream Superlight production process, which uses high-strength aluminum sections instead of the steel or carbon fiber employed in iStream and iStream Carbon. "Its additional weight reduction over the current process delivers a body-in-white structure approaching 50% of the weight of stamped metal, while achieving new ...

Mid-Engine 2019 Corvette C8 Spied

Image
Chevrolet took a prototype of the upcoming mid-engine Corvette C8 at the track for high-speed testing and the rest is history. The tester you see in the photos here appears to have come a long way since the first scoops and seemingly features a lot of the production-intent bodywork underneath its heavy wrapping. There are very few details out there about the next-gen Corvette, but we have heard that GM is planning to offer the Corvette C8 with three different powertrains. These will include the engines codenamed LT2, LT6 and LT7, with one of them being a hybrid powertrain. There will also be several roof options to choose from, including fixed, targa and a full-glass option. Chevrolet plans to use composite materials in both the body and parts of its new platform as well to keep the weight down. Production is said to start at the Bowling Green, Kentucky in January 2019, with the rollout of the different derivatives to be completed by the middle of 2021. Some reports suggest ...

Porsche GT Boss Says Mid-Engined 911 Is A Possibility

Image
The Chevrolet Corvette will probably shift from a front-engined layout to a mid-engined setup when it arrives in the next couple of years, but could it be joined by another mid-engine player starting with 9 and ending with a 1? Well, according to Andreas Preuninger, the model line director of Porsche's GT division, there's a possibility that the 911 could become mid-engined in the future. Preuninger expressed his optimism about such a model at the Geneva Motor Show while speaking with Car&Driver. Although he confirmed that a mid-engine 911 for the road isn't “in the making at the moment,” even getting a comment from him about such a vehicle has our cogs working to dream up such a vehicle. Late last year, Porsche's new 911 RSR racer was revealed with a mid-engined layout and initially, hopes of such a setup being replicated in the street car were dashed. However, Preuninger said that creating such a car is very much possible if motorsport regulations continu...
