Evija Name Confirmed For Lotus’ New Electric Hypercar

Image
Lotus has used the Goodwood Festival of Speed to announce its upcoming hypercar will be called the Evija. Previously known as the Type 130, the Evija name is pronounced “ev-eye-a” and means “the first in existence” or “the living one.” Lotus says this makes the moniker “highly appropriate” as the Evija will become the first electric hypercar from a British automaker. The Evija will go into production next year and the company says it will open an “exciting new chapter in the history of the iconic British sports car brand.” The automaker also noted the car is the first major new model to be launched under Geely ownership and hinted this “significance cannot be overstated.” The company has been tight-lipped about specifics, but the car will be unveiled at special event in London later this month. In the meantime, the company has released a new teaser video which shows the model will have a slender center console with hexagonal buttons to start the car and shift the transmission ...

‘McLaren Of Grand Tourers’ Coming To Join Sports, Super, And Ultimate Series Models

Image
We knew McLaren was bringing the Speedtail, 720S Spider, and 600LT Spider to the Geneva Motor Show, but now the automaker has surprised everyone by announcing an all-new model. Only referred to as the ‘McLaren of Grand Tourers’, it will be built separately from the marque’s existing Sports Series, Super Series, and Ultimate Series range of vehicles. Chief executive Mike Flewitt said that McLaren was encouraged to build this all-new model after receiving feedback from customers of the existing McLaren 570GT. “It will be a car that combines competition levels of performance with continent-crossing capability, wrapped in a beautiful lightweight body. It’s a car that has been designed for distance and one that will also provide the comfort and space expected of a Grand Tourer.” “But with a level of agility never experienced before in this segment. In addition, it will be the lightest of Grand Tourers and by also having the best power-to-weight ratio, I promise it will be one of th...

Official: Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Lapped Nurburgring In A Stunning 6:44.97

Image
The fourth Lamborghini Aventador SVJ teaser shows the supercar bravely attacking the Nurburgring in a timed lap, and revealing another “best”: the “aerodynamic efficiency”. Equipped with the Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA), or active aerodynamics in plain English, the supercar appears to have shattered the Nurburgring lap record of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. In a report published and removed by AMS, the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is said to have lapped the German track in 6:44.95. That’s some 2+ seconds quicker than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, which did it in 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds last fall. In turn, the German supercar stole the crown from the Lamborghini Huracan Performante’s head, which ran the 20.6km (12.8mi) long course in 6:52.01 six months earlier. Before taking sides, remember that both Lamborghini and Porsche are part of the Volkswagen Group, so this is basically an internal feud, one that led to the development of some of the hottest supercars over the yea...

Lamborghini Confirms Aventador SVJ, Teases Nurburgring Lap Record Attempt

Image
Lamborghini has confirmed that the upcoming hardcore Aventador will be called SVJ, signaling the return of the iconic Jota name. The Italian car maker released a short video showing the very same test car we’ve seen before being driven flat out at the Nurburgring, under the title “Aventador SVJ meets the Nurburgring”. It’s been reported before that the Italian car maker has already broken the production car lap record set by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS with the Aventador SVJ, which allegedly posted a 6min 45sec lap time, two seconds quicker than the Porsche. Lamborghini has proven the Aventador’s speed around the German track before, with the SV version posting a really impressive 6:59. It was Lamborghini’s fastest model around the Green Hell, up until the Huracan Performante showed up, which lapped the track in 6:52. The new limited version of the Lamborghini Aventador will get a much more aggressive bodywork that’s fitted with an active aero agenda, which played a key role i...

2018 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Laps Nurburgring In 6:56.4 Minutes

Image
Earlier this week, it was reported that the new Porsche 991.2 GT3 RS had lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in under 7 minutes. Now, we have official conformation as well as the video to prove it. The 6:56.4 minute time was set by Porsche works driver Kevin Estre, who shared the wheel with development driver Lars Kern. The new 911 GT3 RS now joins the 918 Spyder and 911 GT2 RS as the third production Porsche with a notarized lap time of under 7 seconds at the Nordschleife. “No other Porsche model gets as close to racing as the new GT3 RS. Many innovative ideas from top-level motorsport were transferred; for example, from the 911 GT3 R. This is what our philosophy for GT models is about: Highest technology must be fascinating but tangible. In this regard there is no harder test for our ideas than the Nordschleife,” stated Porsche’s VP of motorsport and GT cars, Frank Steffen Walliser. Estre started his record lap at 11:40 AM in ideal driving conditions, with a 14-degree Cel...

VW ID Vizzion Concept Lights Up For Geneva In New Teaser

Image
Volkswagen kicked off the teasing game of the new Vizzion Concept last week, when they dropped the first details and official sketches of the electric sedan. A few days later, the German automaker previewed its lounge-like interior, which lacks a traditional steering wheel, pedals, dials, and so on, as it’s fully autonomous. Now, we get to see its headlight, for the first time. The short video reveals plenty of LEDs at the front, along with two strips of lights that join the headlamps together, going around the symbolic grille. It also appears to have muscular creases in the front bumper, wide wheel arches, and large blacked-out wheels. Volkswagen hasn’t divulged anything else about it, except that it’s part of their “future of mobility”. Nevertheless, in addition to the self-driving tech mentioned above, we know that it features an electric powertrain. It combines two motors that work together to push 306PS (302hp) to both axles, allowing the Vizzion to reach a top speed of 1...

Rimac’s Next Hypercar Teased With Soaring Rear Wing

Image
Rimac has published a short teaser video of its Geneva-bound hypercar, offering a glimpse at the vehicle’s exterior design. From the front, the new car bears a striking resemblance to the existing Concept_One but looks even more purposeful with the adoption of slightly slimmer headlights, a much larger front splitter, and air vents on the hood. While the front looks familiar, the rear appears to be a significant departure from the Concept_One with redesigned taillights immediately noticeable. Additionally, the video reveals that the hypercar will have a rear wing which deploys at speed. It may also double as an air brake. Our sources suggest that the hypercar will come equipped with a large 120 kWh battery pack, providing more juice than the Concept_One and allowing for a greater range. Considering power for the Concept_One sits at 1224 hp and 1180 lb-ft of torque, it’s entirely possible the Croatian automaker’s latest offering will have upwards of 1500 hp on tap. The result...

Audi Teases All-New A6, Says Unveiling Will Happen Soon

Image
In this brief 26-second video, Audi isn’t just teasing us with the design of the new-generation A6 saloon, but also with its impending arrival. Does that mean days, weeks? All we know is that the description of the video pretty much translates into: “Audi will soon be presenting the new Audi A6. How designers and engineers have revised the successful model, you will see in the coming days.” We’re also advised to follow the automaker’s Facebook channel, as well as their official blog. Chances are the car is coming to the 2018 Geneva Motor Show next month, which is what we were suspecting all along, although that doesn’t necessarily mean that it can’t be unveiled beforehand. The all-new Audi A6 will reportedly feature Level 3 autonomous technology like the flagship A8, as well as a digital instrument cluster and dual console displays like the recently launched second-generation A7 Sportback. All sorts of advanced driver assistance features are to be expected, as is a wide rang...

Morgan Plus 8 50th Anniversary Edition Is British Craftsmanship At Its Finest

Image
British automaker Morgan is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Plus 8 with a limited edition that’s coming to the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. Teased for the second time in three official images and a video, this example sports a blue lacquered paint finish, which is supposed to be reminiscent of the first Plus 8, along with yellow accents around the grille, bonnet, and rear towing eyes. Developed on the track, only 50 units will be produced and all of them feature an aluminum chassis beneath the traditional body. The lightweight construction helps the latest Morgan weigh just 1,100kg (2,425lbs). Described as “one of the lightest V8 passenger cars in the world”, the Morgan Plus 8 50th Anniversary Edition is powered by a 4.8-liter BMW engine. Naught to 100km/h (0-62mph) takes just 4.5 seconds and top speed is 250km/h (155mph). Moreover, this will be the company’s last sports car to use a naturally aspirated V8. “This 50th Anniversary Edition is fitting illustration of t...

Lexus Confirms UX Reveal For Geneva With This Teaser

Image
Lexus first unveiled the UX in concept form at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. The basic idea is for a small crossover to slot in under the NX and take on the likes of the Mercedes GLA, Audi Q3, BMW X1, Acura MDX, and Infiniti QX30 in a rapidly growing market segment of compact luxury crossovers. The UX will bring Toyota’s luxury SUV lineup up to five models, joining the larger NX and RX crossovers and the GX and LX sport-utes. Not much else is known at this point about the production model, and there’s very little to be gleaned from the teaser image above. But we’re anticipating both UX 250 and UX 250h models to incorporate four-cylinder engines – the latter with a hybrid assist. One way or another, we’ll find out more within the next few weeks. Along with the UX, Lexus will be showcasing the three-row RX L crossover at the other end of the spectrum, along with the LF-1 Limitless concept that debuted in Detroit – both marking their European debuts at the Swiss expo. There’ll also ...

New Porsche 911 GT2 RS Destroyed Huracan Performante's Ring Lap With A Record 6:47.3

Image
Porsche's 2018 911 GT2 RS is not only the most powerful 911 ever, but also the fastest one on the Nurburgring. Moreover, it's also the fastest rear-wheel drive production car to have lapped the famous German track, after it managed to cover the 20.6km (12.8-mile) run in just 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds. Thanks to this impressive achievement, the supercar proved that it's just 1.4 seconds slower on the Nurburgring than the electric NextEV Nio EP9, and faster than the Radical SR8LM, Lamborghini Huracan Performante, and basically all other high-performance machines. "At the start of the development process, we set ourselves a lap time target for the GT2 RS of less than 7 minutes and 5 seconds", said Porsche's Motorsport and GT Cars Vice President, Frank-Steffen Walliser. "The credit for beating this target by 17.7 seconds goes to our development engineers, mechanics and drivers, who demonstrated an exceptionally strong team performance." For t...

MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept Revealed

Image
MINI has taken the wraps off the new John Cooper Works GP Concept. Set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the concept draws inspiration from the company's accomplishments at the 1967 Monte Carlo Rally. Looking decidedly aggressive, the car features a large front splitter and a honeycomb mesh grille with red accents. The sporty styling continues further back as designers installed extended front fenders, a hood scoop, and 19-inch lightweight alloy wheels with red and black accents. Continuing aft of the A-pillar, the concept has been equipped with aerodynamic mirrors and carbon fiber side skirts. Of course, the biggest change is the addition of widened rear fenders which channel air around the body. Other highlights include a massive rear wing and a center-mounted dual exhaust system. Since the concept was designed for racing, the interior has been stripped of all non-essential equipment. However, the company added an aluminum roll cage and two racing seats...

Image
The Frankfurt Motor Show is right around the corner and Mercedes has released a new teaser video of the facelifted S-Class Cabriolet. Set to be unveiled next month, the updated model follows in the footsteps of the facelifted sedan and will feature a host of improvements. The teaser video doesn't reveal much but we can expect to see modified bumpers and restyled headlights. The interior will receive a minor refreshing that should include two new 12.3-inch high-resolution displays. We can also expect a revised steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls that respond to swiping motions. Buyers could also find updated trim and upholstery combinations. On the technology front, the model should be offered with improved driver assistance systems including DISTRONIC Active Proximity Assist, Active Steer Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Emergency Stop Assist, and Traffic Sign Assist. Mercedes X-Class Unveiled, Looks To Upstage The VW Amarok

Image
Mercedes has officially unveiled the new X-Class pickup truck. The truck has also been equipped with plastic body cladding, muscular wheel arches, and vertical taillights. Three different configurations will be offered including a work-focused X-Class Pure, a consumer-grade X-Class Progressive, and a lifestyle variant dubbed the X-Class Power. Regardless of which model is selected, all will feature a practical bed that comes standard with cargo area lighting and a 12-volt socket which can be used to power equipment such as air compressors and saws. The truck also has a rear bumper with an integrated step but that can be removed to allow the tailgate to open a full 180 degrees. The interior doesn't live up to the luxurious X-Class concepts but it comes equipped a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and circular air vents. Entry-l...
