Volvo has just shown two new concepts it says are big hints of what its  new 40 series  small cars will look like when they start to appear in 2017. The four-door sedan (40.2) and taller crossover (40.1) – likely to be labeled S40 and XC40, respectively – shown Wednesday in Sweden are the strongest hints at the new compact sedan and  compact crossover  the brand sorely needs to do battle with the biggest premium rivals in all of the crucial global markets. The Swede’s assault on the premium segment is getting really, really serious with their new  Audi A3  and Mercedes-Benz GLA fighters. And after the raving reviews of the  XC90  and the launch of the impressive S90/V90, we have high expectations indeed for the new 40-Series. The big change?  Volvo  dropped the (Thor) Hammer on the front end, bringing its signature light styling cue to the  V40 . It also added a new grille, beefed up the Iron Mark, and brought five new colors, including four versions of blue. The vehicle also receives new so-called "rank marks" that differentiate the trims. You'll know if you get the base car as opposed to the Cross Country as opposed to the R-Design. Inside, the V40 gets a new upholstery, City Weave, new aluminum trims, new colors, and updated door inserts. The R-Design also gets new treadplates. As you can tell, this is kind of a minor update. Meanwhile,  Volvo  improved its On Call smart phone app to include voice-control for some features and a Flic ...
