2020 Mercedes GLC Coupe Combines Sportier Styling With More Power

Image
Mercedes is gearing up for the New York Auto Show by unveiling the 2020 GLC Coupe. Set to go on sale in the United States late this year, the facelifted crossover features a sportier front fascia and an evolutionary “contoured diamond-block grille.” The latter is flanked by restyled LED headlights which feature distinctive daytime running lights. The familiar styling continues out back as the GLC Coupe adopts new taillights and a sportier dual exhaust system. We can also see a new rear diffuser and plenty of chrome trim. Moving into the cabin, drivers will be greeted by a new steering wheel which features updated controls. The crossover also gains a multi-functional touchpad which replaces the previous rotary push-button controller used for the infotainment system. Speaking of the infotainment system, designers installed an updated unit which features a 10.25-inch display (Europeans get a base 7-inch display) and the latest MBUX operating system. Other highlights inclu...

2020 Mercedes GLC Gets New Tech And A Blink-And-You-Miss-It Styling Refresh

Image
The facelifted 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC has just premiered as next week’s Geneva Motor Show inches closer. Mercedes-Benz dropped a teaser video of the updated model yesterday but unfortunately, it offered few details about the vehicle’s new exterior. As we suspected, however, the 2020 GLC doesn’t look any different than the outgoing model, unless you really look hard, but it does borrow some fresher styling details from the larger Mercedes-Benz GLE. For example, the front of the facelifted GLC now includes a similar grille to the GLE, complete with two silver horizontal slats. The GLC’s hood also features similar character lines to its larger sibling. In addition, there is a hint of the smaller Mercedes-Benz GLA facelift in the GLC’s redesigned front bumper. Different headlights with incorporated LED daytime running lights have also been fitted by the German automaker. The side profile of the SUV has gone largely unchanged but Mercedes has made some alterations to the rear, n...

New Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake, Concept EQV And GLC Facelift Confirmed For Geneva

Image
The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQV and the CLA Shooting Brake headline the automaker’s presence at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. The company has announced the full lineup for the 89th edition of the Swiss auto show and there’s a lot to talk about. For starters, the Concept EQV is described as “the world’s first SUV in the premium segment with purely battery-electric drive.” Where does that leave the EQC, then? Anyway, Mercedes says the EQV study is a near-series concept vehicle that combines “locally emission-free mobility with impressive performance, maximum functionality and aesthetic design.” Unless the press release mistakenly describes the EQV as an SUV instead of an MPV (which is most likely the case), we should be in for a big surprise. Judging by the study’s name, one would be inclined to think it’s an all-electric version of the V-Class. The mystery will no doubt be solved on March 5 when the press conference is scheduled. Since we’ve mentioned the V-Class, the people-...

Mercedes Recalls Half A Million Vehicles For Unexpected Airbag Deployment

Image
Mercedes-Benz has announced the recall of nearly half a million vehicles across the United States due to a problem with their airbags. According to the recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the driver's airbag could unexpectedly deploy under certain conditions – but only if two problems arise at the same time, and apparently owing nothing to the massive Takata recall we'd associate with this kind of problem. If the air bag clockspring is broken, and an electrostatic discharge occurs, then the airbag in the steering wheel could deploy accidentally. That doesn't strike us as a scenario likely to happen very often. But since the deployment of the airbag could be disruptive, to say the least, it's probably a good thing that Mercedes is calling in any vehicles that could be affected. Included in the recall are various variants of the CLA, GLA, GLK, GLC, GLC Coupe, B-Class, C-Class (sedan, coupe, and convertible), and E-Class (sedan, w...

Mercedes GLC F-Cell Is The First Plug-In Road Car With A Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Image
Mercedes revealed the new GLC F-Cell, the first car destined for series production that combines a hydrogen fuel cell with a plug-in battery pack. The new GLC F-Cell debuted as a preproduction model, with the car currently offering a combined driving range of up to 437km (272 miles) and an electric range of up to 49km (30 miles). The innovative powertrain offered a combined output of 197hp (200PS - 147kW) and 350Nm of torque (258lb-ft). Mercedes claims that the fuel cell system in the GLC is around 30 percent more compact than the one in the B-Class F-Cell, allowing it for the first time to be housed entirely in the engine bay, like a conventional engine. “Our many years of experience with fuel-cell technology pay dividends in the new GLC F-CELL: its long electric range, short refuelling times and everyday practicality of an SUV will make it the perfect vehicle,” said Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler. “This is made possible by the compact co...

2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC63 And GLC Coupe 63 Bring The V8 Thunder To NY

Image
Mercedes finally did it, stuffing their sonorous 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 under the hood of the GLC and GLC Coupe. The new 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 4MATIC+ and GLC 63 4MATIC+ Coupé are the first of a new breed of super high-performance mid-sized crossovers, which will compete in the future with BMW’s X3M. The 400hp Porsche Macan Turbo is also on Merc’s radar. Powering this dynamic duo, or rather trio, since the GLC 63 Coupe also comes in a more potent ‘S’ flavor, is AMG’s ever-present 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 that can be found from the C63 sedan all the way up to the AMG GT supercar. In this application, the handcrafted lump produces 469hp (476PS) with a peak torque of 479 lb-ft (650Nm) in the GLC63 SUV and GLC63 Coupe, and 503hp (510PS) and 516 lb-ft (700Nm) in the GLC63 S Coupe. All models come with an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9-speed transmission featuring a start-off wet clutch that replaces a traditional torque converter, sourced from the Mercedes-AMG E63 S. The latter als...

New Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe Spices Things Up With Bi-Turbo V6

Image
After announcing plans to add a hotter AMG version to the new GLC Coupe’s range back in  June at the presentation of the series , Mercedes-Benz has formally introduced the GLC 43 4Matic Coupé. Like a number of other  43-badged cars in Mercedes-AMG’s lineup , the sporty crossover makes use of a 3.0-liter bi-turbocharged gasoline V6 that is rated for 362hp (367PS) and 383 lb-ft (520Nm) of peak torque. It’s paired to an nine-speed 9G‑TRONIC automatic with shortened shift times and the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive configured with a rear bias torque distribution (31:69).  This results in a zero to 100km/h acceleration time of 4.9 seconds (0-60mph in 4.8 sec), an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h (155mph), which coincidently, matches  BMW’s rivalling 355hp (360PS) X4 M40i , and a combined fuel economy of 8.4l/100km on the European cycle, equal to 28 mpg US and 33.6mpg UK.  To sharpen the drive, there’s a host of Mercedes-AMG improvements and upg...
