General Motors shocked the auto industry when it announced plans to close up to five North American plants and slash 15 percent of its salaried workforce earlier today. The initial release was light on specifics, but the company has now added a “North American Capacity Actions” sheet which spells out of the death of a number of different models. Like previous actions by Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, GM’s sedan lineup is seeing major cuts. Things will kick off on March 1st 2019, when the last Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Volt are built at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant in Michigan. At the same time, a couple hundred miles away, the last Chevrolet Cruze will be built at the Lordstown Assembly Plant in Ohio. Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen has confirmed plans to eliminate a number of sedans as the company tries to accommodate customers who can't get enough crossovers. Speaking with Reuters, de Nysschen confirmed "We have to rebalance our sedan portfolio" and this will spell the end for the ATS, CTS, and XTS. The models won't be phased out overnight but the company doesn't plan to replace them once their lifecycles end in 2019. Instead, the company will launch an all-new CT5 which is designed to appeal customers looking for a sedan that costs between $35,000 and $45,000. For comparison, the ATS starts $34,595 while the CTS and XTS both start around $45,500. The CT5 will eventually be joined by a new entry-level sedan that will compete with models such as the Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA. Cadillac revealed the 2018 XTS which now comes with a revised exterior look, more tech and improved ride comfort. Pictures of the updated model first surfaced a couple of months ago in China, revealing the new model’s redesigned front and rear fascia that bring it in line with the brand’s other big sedan, the CT6. Cadillac also updated the color and trim options for the interior, which now include a Platinum-exclusive Maple Sugar with Jet Black combo. Changes have also been made to the front seats, which now feature a different foam geometry, wire frame structure and heat pad design in order to make them more comfortable. The company has also added more engineered sound insulators to the cabin in order to further suppress noises from outside. The first pictures of the facelifted 2018 Cadillac XTS have surfaced in China. Posted by Autohome, the images reveal the full-size sedan will receive a new front fascia that is heavily inspired by newer models such as the CT6 and XT5. The changes are immediately noticeable and include a new grille, restyled headlights, and a revised bumper with larger air intakes. The updated styling carries over to the rear as designers installed a new trunk which is flanked by L-shaped taillights. The rear license plate bracket also moves to the rear bumper, while the spoiler has been enlarged. It remains unclear if the cabin will receive any styling tweaks but we'll likely see some technology updates at the very least. Engine options could carryover and include a familiar 3.6-liter V6 that produces 304 hp (308 PS) and 264 lb-ft (357 Nm) of torque. Cadillac chief executive Johan de Nysschen has outlined the company's updated future product plans which include a host of significant model refreshes and a range of brand new models. In the comments section of an article from  The Detroit Bureau , the executive said that the much talked-about range-topping sedan, known as the CT8, has been 'revised' and will  no longer be a sedan , perhaps suggesting that it will instead take the form of a luxurious SUV. Alternatively, there's a chance he is hinting that a flagship four-door coupe is being favored. Additionally, de Nysschen says that contrary to speculation, the Cadillac XTS won't be axed and that a major refresh is in fact on the cards.
