The times they are a-chargin’. With an eye into the future, Ferrari has introduced its first six-cylinder engine on a road-going model since the seventies, the new 296 GTB. Designed to slot into the range above the F8 Tributo, Ferrari says it’s ‘the most fun to drive car in our product range’. Called the 296 GTB, the new car swaps the F8’s turbocharged eight-cylinder engine for a hybridised V6, making this Ferrari’s first six-cylinder sports car since the Dino 246 (which didn’t actually wear Ferrari badges). It will cost €269,000 (equivalent to $321,000/£231,000), and the first cars should be with European customers in early 2022, with U.S. cars arriving later that year. But if you’re worried about the loss of two cylinders resulting in a drop in performance, you can rest easy. Ferrari has finally revealed the name of its special edition 812: meet the new 812 Competizione and its open-top sibling, the Competizione A. The headline figure of the new Ferrari 812 Competizione is of course the horsepower, which gets an upgraded version of the naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine producing 818 HP, instead of the Superfast’s 789 HP, while revving up to a shocking 9,500 rpm. Torque is slightly reduced from 529 lb-ft (717 Nm) to 513 lb-ft (695 Nm). The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission comes with new software that further reduces shift times by 5 percent, retaining the same ratios with the ‘regular’ 812 Superfast. Ferrari has revealed the new SF90 Spider, the droptop variant of the SF90 Stradale and the company’s first plug-in hybrid spider, during a special online event. As expected, the new Spider version of the Ferrari SF90 features the same heavily electrified powertrain as the fixed-roof model, meaning a combined output of 986 HP (1,000 PS) and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque. The astonishing power figures are a combination of a twin-turbo V8 engine producing 769 HP (780 PS) with three electric motors kicking out an additional 217 HP (220 PS). After the unveiling of the Portofino-based Roma coupe late last year, it was only a matter of time before Ferrari upgraded the convertible model as well, seeing as the fixed-top car brought a series of upgrades. Enter the 2021 Ferrari Portofino M, which gains the Roma’s 612 HP (620 PS / 456 kW) powertrain as well as exterior and interior styling tweaks. Adding the letter ‘M’ to the name (it stands for ‘Modificata’) does not mean the old Portofino gets to continue: the Portofino M facelift effectively replaces it. It’s one of those facelift jobs that need a good look at to notice the changes, though. On the outside, the Portofino M adopts a new front bumper with larger air intakes for a more aggressive look plus a new air vent at wheel arch height that’s said to help reduce overall drag. Ferrari has officially unveiled its latest creation named Roma. Billed as an icon of Italian design, the Roma seeks to embrace the “carefree, pleasurable way of life that characterized Rome in the 1950s and ‘60s.” Ferrari didn’t say much about the model, but it has an aerodynamic front fascia with a somewhat retro grille. The latter resides above a pronounced splitter and is flanked by distinctive headlights with ‘floating’ daytime running lights. Moving further back, the Roma has a steeply sloping hood and a rakish windscreen. We can also see sculpted bodywork which has an uninterrupted appearance thanks to flush-mounted door handles. The car’s design becomes more aggressive at the rear as the Roma has bulging fenders with integrated LED taillights. The model also has a black rear bumper with an integrated four-tailpipe sports exhaust system. Rumors about Maranello developing a topless version of the 812 were confirmed last week, after a leak showed the car being presented during an exclusive event. As expected, the GTS shares its hardware with the Superfast, meaning a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 that produces 789 HP (800 PS) at 8,500 rpm and 529 lb-ft (718 Nm) of peak torque at 7,000 rpm, which, by the way, makes it the most powerful series-production convertible in the world. We all knew the Ferrari F8 Spider was coming and the Italian car manufacturer has just taken the covers of its latest mid-engined droptop. Powering the F8 Spider is the same twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V8 engine as the F8 Tributo coupe to pump out a hearty 711 and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) of torque. Ferrari says the F8 Spider accelerates to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 2.9 seconds, hits 124 mph (200 km/h) in 8.2 seconds, and continues through to a top speed of 211 mph (340 km/h). The engine itself is very similar to the unit that powered the Ferrari 488 Pista, hence why it produces the same amount of grunt. Ferrari also uses exhaust manifolds for the F8 Tributo and F8 Spider made from lightweight Inconel. Ferrari quotes a dry weight with all the available carbon fiber trimmings of 3086 lbs (1400 kg) which is a touch heavier than the F8 Tributo. Dubbed the SF90 Stradale, the car is a series-production supercar which celebrates the 90th anniversary of Scuderia Ferrari and the strong link between Ferrari’s track and road cars. Of course, the big news is the powertrain which features a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine that produces 769 hp (574 kW / 780 PS) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. It is paired to a hybrid system which features three electric motors. One of motors is sandwiched between the V8 and a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the other two are located at the front axle. The electric motors are powered by a 7.9 kWh lithium-ion battery and produce a combined output of 217 hp (162 kW / 220 PS). This gives the all-wheel drive SF90 Stradale an overall output of 986 hp (735 kW / 1000 PS).
