Honda’s Geneva stars this year might have been the new CR-V and the jacked-up Jazz X-Road, but the real news was about the lovely retro-flavored Urban EV concept. The Japanese company announced that the order books for the production version of the compact electric car will open in early 2019. Honda also said that the production Urban EV model will be introduced in Europe in late 2019. “A production version of this highly acclaimed concept will be introduced to Europe during late 2019, and in response to the positive feedback to this model, we expect to open order banks for the Urban EV during early 2019,” said Philip Ross, Senior Vice President of Honda Motor Europe during Honda’s Geneva motor show press conference. The Honda Urban EV concept was one of the biggest surprises of the last Frankfurt Motor Show and now it’s been officially confirmed that we’re getting a production version in 2019. Honda has been developing a dedicated platform for electric vehicles, upon which the production Urban EV will be based. Production will start in 2019, with Europe being the first region to receive the new Honda EV, followed by Japan in 2020. The good news is that Honda is going to keep the concept’s design as untouched as possible, meaning that the final product will gain just the basic series-production stuff like mirrors, thicker pillars for safety, smaller wheels but hopefully the retro spirit of this electric car will leave on. Also the suicide doors' chances for production are sadly slim. The focus at the Frankfurt Motor Show may be more on European automakers, but Honda has attracted its fair share of attention as well with the handsome little Urban EV Concept you see here. The electric hatchback adopts a decidedly retro design and proportions, but not without its modern flourishes – especially when it comes to the powertrain. Despite its old-school appearance, the Urban EV Concept is a pure EV. No details were disclosed as to how much power it packs, but it does incorporate a new Power Manager Concept system designed to “store energy more efficiently, releasing electricity generated by renewable sources back into the home or selling it back to the grid.” Into the form that's four inches shorter from bow to stern than the Jazz/Fit, Honda has fit a four-seat cabin accessed by a pair of rear hinged “suicide” coach doors. With approximately two weeks left until the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show starts, Honda has announced its premieres for the event. One of them is a zero-emission study, called the Urban EV, which previews a production model that will eventually be sold on the Old Continent. Not much else is known about the brand's new concept car, and the teaser image that accompanies the announcement isn’t exactly revealing either, as it shows its battery charging level on a blue illuminated screen.
