Porsche has taken the wraps off the Taycan Cross Turismo, and to nobody’s surprise the EV sedan’s off road brother looks almost identical to the cool Mission E Cross Turismo Concept from 2018. If there is a surprise, it’s the price: the entry level Taycan 4 Cross Turismo costs $90,900 plus delivery in the US (or £79,340 in the UK). Taken at face value that makes the Cross Turismo $12k more expensive than the entry-level sedan. But Porsche North America says the wagon version is only $1,530 more than the sedan after the new car’s extra equipment is taken into account. That equipment includes all-wheel drive, which you don’t get in the base Taycan and the bigger 93.4kWh Performance Battery Plus, which you can get in the base Taycan, but have to pay extra for. Other standard kit includes adaptive air suspension and a panoramic roof. Legacy automakers have been content to challenge Tesla's all-electric dominance with a range of crossovers. Following a set of sketches, Porsche has released the first official images of the Taycan EV in its production form. The pictured car is wearing a colorful wrap to keep some of the final details a secret but we can get a pretty good idea of what the first all-electric Porsche will look like. Featuring the slogan “Soul, Electrified” on the windshield, the new Porsche Taycan comes with a front end that looks and feels like a Porsche; the headlights appear to wear a sticker that make them look like the units in the Cayman and Boxster models but look closely and you’ll notice the quad-LED units per corner in a similar arrangement with the Mission E concept. The overall design appears to remain close to that of the concept, minus of course dramatic details such as the suicide rear doors. Porsche is only six months away from unveiling their Tesla Model S fighter, the Taycan, which will bow in its final form in September. The company is already taking reservations for its first fully-electric sports saloon and, in Europe, securing a build slot requires a €2,500 ($2,816) down payment. Porsche has officially confirmed that the Mission E Cross Turismo will spawn a production version, alongside the Taycan at the Zuffenhausen facility. It’s unknown when series production will kick off, as Porsche is keeping all other aspects close to its chest for now, but it has been speculated that the production Mission E Cross Turismo might arrive on the market in 2021. By then, Porsche would have hired an additional 300 people at the plant, who will be responsible for putting it together. Essentially a derivative of the upcoming 2019 Porsche Taycan, the Mission E Cross Turismo was previewed by a concept car at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The study has a rather futuristic look and a more practical interior, capable of hauling different equipment easily. Porsche recently confirmed the production version of the Mission E would be called the Taycan, and now the automaker has released additional information about its upcoming electric vehicle. Set to debut next year, the Taycan will have an 800 volt electrical system and two electric motors that produce a combined output in excess of 592 HP (441 kW / 600 PS). This will enable it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in less than 3.5 seconds and 0-200 km/h (0-124 mph) in less than 12 seconds. Furthermore, the model will have a range in excess of 500 km (310 miles) in the New European Driving Cycle. While the company has previously confirmed those numbers, the automaker noted the Taycan will have two “permanently excited synchronous motors, like those deployed in the Le Mans–winning 919 Hybrid.” Billing them as the “turbos of the electric motor milieu,” the motors generate a permanent rotary motion that can be applied at any time without needing to be started. Porsche’s 70th anniversary celebration continues as the company has used the event to announce the production version of the Mission E concept will be called the Taycan. Meaning “lively young horse,” in a reference to the animal on the company’s crest, the Taycan will become Porsche’s first electric sports car when it enters production next year. Besides confirming the name, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume revealed the Taycan will be powered by two electric motors that produce a combined output of more than 592 hp (441 kW / 600 PS).
