Your eyes are not deceiving you and this is definitely not a rendering. Yes, the most luxurious member of BMW’s crossover family, the X7, has been turned into a pickup truck by none other than the Bavarian automaker itself! Mind you, it’s only for show purposes, as it has been created for the company’s Motorrad Days, where it will be presented alongside many motorcycles. Based on a prototype, the study has BMW’s vocational trainees behind it, who collaborated with the Munich plant’s Concept Vehicle Construction and Model Technology divisions. It took them 10 months to complete it, which means that work began one month before the X7 was first shown to the world last October. The team behind the ambitious project has made it 10 cm (4 in) longer compared to the SUV, and the length of the bed varies from 1.4 to 2.0 meters (55-79 in), closed and open, respectively. Consumers can’t seem to get enough crossovers and BMW has been happy to comply as the company already offers six different models. However, there was one thing missing from its lineup – a competitor to the Mercedes GLS. BMW is finally responding in the form of the 2019 X7. Larger and more luxurious than the redesigned X5, the production model closely echoes the X7 iPerformance concept which was introduced last year. While the concept received a slightly chilly reception, BMW has high hopes for the production model as the company says it offers a unique blend of “presence, exclusivity and spaciousness.” It certainly has a commanding presence as the front fascia is dominated by a massive chrome grille which will likely prove to be controversial. BMW has published the first official teaser image of the long-awaited X7 ahead of the vehicle’s public premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month. The large SUV was previewed last year in the form of the Concept X7 iPerformance and this image confirms that the production vehicle’s design will stay true to the concept. With this in mind, we can see that the X7 ha s the same slim headlights and truly gargantuan kidney grilles, giving the vehicle a rather odd-looking front fascia. Although only the front is shown in this teaser, we expect the road-going X7’s sides and rear to also look very similar to the concept. Buyers of the 2019 BMW X7 will have a selection of powertrains at their disposal, including a 3.0-liter straight-six pumping out 335 hp and a 4.4-liter V8 with 456 hp. BMW’s Spartanburg plant has started churning out the first pre-production examples of the upcoming X7 full-size luxury SUV. The Bavarian car maker is now putting the X7 through its final stages of development, with the production version expected to hit the market at the end of 2018. “This is a very special vehicle and our employees are looking forward to yet a further member of the X family,” said Knudt Flor, head of the BMW Group Spartanburg plant. “Together with the BMW X7, a total of five BMW X models will be exported from Spartanburg to all four corners of the globe.” The pre-production examples of the BMW X7 will be used for homologation and registration, as well as for endurance tests in extreme weather conditions. The production of the pre-production models also serves as a test for the Spartanburg plant, helping them optimise the future series production of the X7. BMW promised to unveil something pretty big at the Frankfurt Motor Show and they weren't kidding as the company will introduce the new X7 iPerformance concept. Designed to preview the upcoming production model, the pictures provided by Wheelsage show the concept is a massive crossover with an enormous grille  The bold styling is visible elsewhere as the concept has vertical styling elements in the front air intakes and an impressive amount of metallic trim. Moving further back, we can see flush-mounted door handles and an electric charging port on the front fender. Designers also installed massive alloy wheels and a panoramic glass roof. Rounding out the styling features are a ventilated rear bumper and slender taillights. The cabin takes a different approach as it appears much more luxurious and subtle than the exterior. Hard as it may seem to believe now, there was a time when BMW didn't make SUVs or crossovers. But this ended in 1999, with the launch of the first-gen X5, and the German automaker has now confirmed the addition of yet another model to its already comprehensive fleet next year. That model is the X7, the new flagship crossover that's set to hit showrooms in late 2018. The announcement came as part of the launch of the new X3. Slated to be positioned above the X5 in BMW's growing crossover lineup, the X7 is poised to take on the Mercedes GLS with a larger format allowing for as many as seven seats – or as few as four, depending on the specification.
