Mercedes AMG Debuts 1000HP Project One: The King Has Arrived

Image
After a long period of teasing and playing with shadows, the new Mercedes AMG Project One finally made its world debut as the world’s first road legal car with a Formula 1 powertrain. Power comes from a reworked version of the hybrid system found in the W08 F1 car, including the turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 engine and no less than four electric motors. The two front electric motors are state-of-the-art units, being capable of revving up to 50,000rpm when the current best motors in the market rev up to 20,000rpm. The third electric motor is integrated into the turbocharger while the fourth one is mounted directly on the combustion engine. Each one of the front motors are producing 160hp (120kW), with the electric motor on the engine making the same amount of power and the one mounted on the turbocharger being a 120hp (90kW) unit. Total power output is "over 1000hp". Mercedes AMG claims that turbo lag isn’t just eliminated with this setup but the response ti...

The Mercedes-AMG Project One's Rear Looks Insane

Image
Mercedes-AMG has released one final teaser image of its Project One hypercar before the Frankfurt Motor Show. This teaser is the most revealing to date and shows off most of the F1-powered road car’s rear-end. As previous images have revealed, the Project One will feature a large roof scoop while it’ll ditch a rear window in favor of two massive NACA ducts and air vents over the Formula One-derived 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine. Elsewhere, the teaser offers a glimpse of the hypercar’s taillights and just like a current Formula One car, it features a single central exhaust pipe and two smaller exhausts dedicated for the wastegates. As we’ve known for some time, the Project One’s F1 engine will be mated to the same energy recovery systems as the race car. Power will soar above 1,000 hp and just 275 units will be produced worldwide. Carscoops

It's Official: Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar Coming To Frankfurt

Image
And with this announcement, we have what could very well be the hottest premiere at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. Accompanying the short press release is yet another teaser image of spectacular Mercedes-AMG Project One, which reveals its massive fenders and roof scoop, in addition to what appears to be LED headlights, and the 'AMG' lettering engraved in the front bumper's air intake. As expected, the German hypercar will have seating for two, and it will bring the Formula 1 hybrid technology to the road, producing more than 1,000 horses from the 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol engine used in the brand's F1 car. The internal combustion unit is said to be supplemented by four electric motors, "one for each front wheel, one on the crankshaft, and one in the engine turbocharger", according to the AMG head honcho, Tobias Moers. In this form, the Project One will be able to reach speeds in excess of 350km/h (217mph), and it should be able to rev up to...

This Is The F1 Powertrain Of The Mercedes-AMG Project One

Image
Mercedes-AMG has revealed the powertrain and underpinnings of the Project One hybrid hypercar at the Nurburgring 24 Hours, offering the world its first taste of the radical performance car. As we know, sitting at the heart of the Project One is a Formula 1-derived 1.6-liter V6 engine that uses various components used in recent F1 seasons. Coupled to the V6 is a turbocharger that is joined by an electric motor designed to ensure the turbo can instantly provide maximum boost whenever needed. The Project One also uses two electric motors to drive the front wheels and a third motor connected to the crankshaft that provides extra grunt to the rear. It is reported that power for the combustion engine will sit at around 730 hp, combined power will easily exceed 1,000 hp and that a thermal efficiency of 43 per cent has been achieved. Mercedes says the F1 engine revs to 11,000 rpm, a fair bit less than the 14,500 rpm of current F1 cars but in a class of its own for production cars. Com...

AMG Project One's F1-Derived Engine Will Be Good Enough For Just 31,000 Miles

Image
Upcoming customers of the Mercedes-AMG Project One will have to part with at least $2.4 million to buy the car but shouldn’t count on the hypercar having bulletproof reliability. According to AMG boss Tobias Moers, the Formula 1-derived 1.6-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine will have a shell life of just 50,000 km (31,000 miles), reports Motoring. “We have an understanding of about 50,000km. This is OK for us. I think that’s good enough. That’s the life of the engine. Then we do some rework, like in a race car. But you don’t need an F1 team, you don’t need special gas [fuel]. You can push the button and it fires up,” he said. In some respects, modifying an engine lifted from a Formula One car to survive for 50,000 km without a rebuild is quite an impressive feat. On the other hand, a number of more mainstream and significantly cheaper engines can last over 1 million km. Fortunately, we don’t expect the 50,000 km engine life to put off many potential Project One buyers. ...

Mercedes-AMG Hypercar Has Been named 'Project One'

Image
Mercedes-AMG have started referring to their  upcoming hypercar  using the 'Project One' designation, which appears to be a codename.   Announced on their official  website , the Germans describe their upcoming model as "probably the most fascinating two-seater that will ever hit the road". Underneath its muscular body that was developed in the wind tunnel, Mercedes-Benz utilizes a  high-revving 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine  taken straight from their F1 car and modified for road use, which, together with an electric motor, pushes out more than 1,000 horsepower.  Word on the street has it that despite, not even knowing what it looks like yet,  collectors have already purchased  almost the entire batch, which is said to include 200 to 300 examples, priced at roughly $2.5 million each. The car is expected to be introduced in the second half of the year.
