But, much like the handling-focused Chiron Pur Sport that arrived in 2020 to prove that Bugattis could do more than go fast in a straight line, the 300+ gave up a big dollop of luxury and refinement (of Bugattiness, if you like) to deliver that headline-grabbing top speed. So, what if you desire the power and performance of the Super Sport 300+, but don’t want to compromise on the luxury features present on a ‘regular’ Chiron? That’s where the new Super Sport comes in. Designed to celebrate the company’s 30th anniversary, the Venom GT successor is named after F5 tornados which have wind speeds of up to 318 mph (512 km/h). That wasn’t an arbitrary decision as it hints at the car’s targeted top speed of more than 311 mph (500 km/h). In order to hit that impressive number, the car has been equipped with a specially developed 6.6-liter V8 engine known as the Fury. It’s hand-built and features a cast iron block, aluminum cylinder heads and a dry sump lubrication system. The engine has also been equipped with two turbochargers which enable it to be the “most powerful production road car engine ever made.” In terms of raw numbers, the engine develops 1,817 hp (1,355 kW / 1,842 PS) and 1,193 lb-ft (1,617 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to a seven-speed semi-automatic transmission which sends power to the rear wheels. SSC North America has used the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to unveil the 2019 Tuatara. Looking virtually identical to the concept that was unveiled over seven years ago, the production Tuatara has a sleek carbon fiber body that allows the model to have a drag coefficient of 0.279. The company says this is significantly lower than competitors such as the Bugatti Chiron (0.36), Koenigsegg Agera (0.33) and Hennessey Venom F5 (0.33). Overall, the car measures 174.4 inches (4429 mm) long, 78.4 inches (1991 mm) wide and 43 inches (1092 mm) tall with a wheelbase that spans 105.2 inches (2672 mm). The extensive use of carbon fiber also allows the model to have dry weight of 2750 lbs (1247 kg). SSC North America hasn’t released detailed specifications, but the company confirmed the Tuatara will be powered by a twin-turbo 5.9-liter V8 engine which features an 8800 rpm redline and an 8.8:1 compression ratio. Hennessey has used Monterey Car Week to unveil the engine that will power the Venom F5. Since the company has previously said the F5 aims to become the “first road car capable of achieving more than 300 mph (482 km/h),” it needs a massive engine with huge performance numbers. That’s exactly what was unveiled today as the engine is a twin-turbo 7.6-liter V8 that is capable of producing more than 1,600 hp (1,193 kW / 1,622 PS) and 1,300 lb-ft (1,760 Nm) torque. To put those numbers into perspective, the Bugatti Divo has a quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine which produces 1,479 hp (1,103 kW / 1,500 PS) and – presumably – 1,180 lb-ft (1,600 Nm) of torque. However, that particular car will be limited to 236 mph (380 km/h). Getting back to the Venom F5, the engine is made from a billet aluminum block and features steel cylinder sleeves as well as a 9.3:1 compression ratio. Seven years after the Tuatara was originally unveiled, SSC North America has announced plans to unveil the production model at Monterey Car Week. Since so much time has passed, little is known about the car. However, the company says the 2019 Tuatara will be a “next generation hypercar that boasts an unmatched drag coefficient, track-level handling characteristics and a top speed that is projected to easily surpass the current world record.” SSC didn’t specify the latter figure, but the company’s statement suggests the Tuatara will be able to exceed the 284.55 mph (457.94 km/h) top speed achieved by the Koenigsegg Agera RS. While the Tuatara was slated to be launched in 2013, the company explained its prolonged absence by saying the model has been subjected to “years of methodical engineering.” SSC says this extended development time will allow the car to have “unparalleled performance” as well as a striking presence. More than a year after it was presented in full, the Bugatti Chiron has finally set out on a record-breaking spree. With Juan Pablo Montoya in the driver's seat, the megacar proved that it needs only 41.96 seconds to go from 0 to 400km/h (248,55mph) and then back to 0, in a distance of 3.112km (1.933miles). The 400km/h (248.55mph) mark was reached 32.6 seconds / 2,621 meters (8,599feet), after which the 41-year old Colombian stepped firmly on the brakes and brought it to a complete stop, helped by the rear wing and special carbon discs, with titanium pistons. This is "the fastest time ever reached and officially measured for this driving maneuver for a production vehicle throughout the world", in Bugatti's own words, and it represents "the first step on the way to a new world speed record for production vehicles", which takes place in 2018.
