As expected, VW has pulled the wraps off its new 2019 Jetta GLI at the Chicago Auto Show, giving us the seventh generation of the compact sport sedan since its original debut in 1984. Using the same 2.0-liter turbo inline-four engine with the VW Golf GTI, the new Jetta GLI offers 228hp and 258lb-ft of torque and a choice between a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The chassis sits 0.6 inches lower than the standard Jetta, thanks to the GLI’s sports suspension that features a strut-type setup at the front and a multilink arrangement at the back. The brakes are shared with the Golf GTI and the Golf R, with 13.4-inch rotors up front. The 2019 Jetta made its debut today at the Detroit Auto Show and the vehicle sports some upgrades that should increase its popularity. Volkswagen has released a handful of sketches which preview the 2019 Jetta. Set to debut at the North American International Auto Show next month, the redesigned sedan will adopt a more upscale exterior that is significantly sportier than its predecessor. As the images show, the car will have an all-new front fascia with a larger grille that is flanked by angular headlights. Moving further back, we can see a sculpted hood and prominent character lines that give the sedan a little more pizzazz. The sketches also suggest the Jetta will have a rakish windscreen, a sportier roofline, and a new trunk with an integrated spoiler. Other notable features slender taillights and dual exhaust system with chrome accents. The interior follows the latest Volkswagen design trends as its shows a relatively straightforward cabin with familiar controls. Volkswagen has teased the 2019 Jetta on the company's consumer website in Canada of all places. First noticed by VW Vortex, the teaser image shows the model will have an evolutionary design and adopt a new front fascia with a more prominent grille. Styling details are hard to make out but the model bears a strong resemblance to images that surfaced earlier this year. The teaser site also includes a countdown clock that reveals the model will be unveiled in a little over 50 days. That's January 18th which falls in line with the North American International Auto Show.
