Chris Bangle's REDS Electric City Car Unveiled In LA

Image
Bangle's first automotive design project since leaving BMW in 2009, the REDS represents a clean-sheet rethink of the form an urban EV should take. As much a rolling living room as it is a motor vehicle, the REDS examines the automobile as an object that remains stationary 90 percent of the time. And not the least innovative approach is its roof. Instead of being swept back, the REDS' roof structure has an overhang to keep the sun out and reduce the need for air conditioning – something that can typically put a real strain on a power car's resources, be they electric or combustion. It still features a large moon roof, but the other half of the top is covered in a solar panel to help replenish the battery. Bangle takes pride in the form that looks like something a kid would draw, its tall form cutting an unconventional profile. Inside the tall greenhouse is room for four (or five when parked) in two bucket seats and a wraparound rear seat. The driver...

Gordon Murray's McLaren F1-Inspired Supercar To Be Launched Under The IGM Brand

Image
New details of Gordon Murray's supercar are starting to emerge, as it will be built under the revived IGM brand, which was first used in the late '60s on the designer's 'T.1' IGM Ford Special. Teased in an official image that partially reveals its mid-engined shape with soft and muscular lines, the as-of-yet-unnamed vehicle is a 50-year celebration of Gordon Murray's career. Said to be "inspired by the engineering principles of the McLaren F1", the new supercar "will be built for contemporary driving conditions featuring the very latest materials and technology". The supercar will be made using the company's iStream Superlight production process, which uses high-strength aluminum sections instead of the steel or carbon fiber employed in iStream and iStream Carbon. "Its additional weight reduction over the current process delivers a body-in-white structure approaching 50% of the weight of stamped metal, while achieving new ...

Ferrari Enzo Designer To Unveil Kode 0 At Pebble Beach

Image
Ken Okuyama might not be a household name but the designer has helped to create a number of memorable vehicles including the Porsche Boxster, Ferarri Enzo, and Ferrari P4/5. His latest creation is called the Kode 0 and it will be unveiled at the Quail, A Motorsports Gathering on August 18th, 2017. One day later, it will be displayed at the Concorso Italiano in Monterey, California. Little is known about the car at this point but it is being described as a one-off model that "brings together Okuyama’s stylish penmanship with a mid-engine V12 in a carbon fiber monocoque." That's not much to go on but the teaser images suggest the model will be a wedge-shaped supercar that features a front spoiler and angular headlights with either LED daytime running lights or LED turn signals. The car also promises to have an extreme profile as one image shows side-mounted air intakes and a flying buttress. Okuyama's previous model, the Kode57, was unveiled last year and it ...
