Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool will sack me like Claudio Ranieri if I don’t deliver trophies

Jurgen Klopp believes Claudio Ranieri’s sacking is a sign of the times in football and that his own position at Liverpool could soon come under threat. While the former Borussia Dortmund coach has never been sacked in his career, he’s under no illusions that his job is as under threat as anyone’s in the Premier League. Liverpool take on Leicester, who will be lead out on Monday night by Craig Shakespeare, and Klopp is aware of how managerial positions in the Premier League are largely determined by short-term success. And he feels he needs to win something at Anfield to keep his job. ‘Nobody needs to remind any of the managers in world football about the business,’ he said ahead of the match. ‘And if we cannot win anything or even come close to big things over the next few years then it will be difficult to go for it. ‘Until now I didn’t understand it as I’ve always been on a long contract, as long as I wanted, and I have no idea why exactly it happened to me. ‘Liverpo...

Jose Mourinho pays tribute to Claudio Ranieri with initials on shirt as he slams Leicester players after sacking

Jose Mourinho has condemned Leicester's 'selfish' players for letting down Claudio Ranieri after he was sacked just nine months on from lifting the Premier League title. Mourinho turned up for his press conference with the initials 'CR' printed on his training top in dedication to Ranieri after posting a picture of them together on social media. And Mourinho saved his most scathing criticism for the players who are understood to have turned against the Italian. 'If some of the stories are true, it's hard to find words to justify it,' he said. 'As managers we have to cope with that. 'Probably the season started with the typical selfishness of others, people thinking about new contracts, leaving, more money, forgetting who helped them to reach a ...

Leicester City sack Claudio Ranieri nine months after Premier League title

Image
Claudio Ranieri, the manager who led Leicester City to one of the more implausible success stories in history, has been sacked only nine months after taking a team of 5,000-1 outsiders to the Premier League title and a football miracle. Ranieri’s dismissal comes barely two weeks after Leicester offered him their “unwavering support” in a statement insisting there was no way his job could be in danger and pointing out that the club’s success had been “based firmly on stability, togetherness and determination to overcome even the greatest of challenges”. That now turns out to be a deception with Leicester’s Thai owners deciding instead that Ranieri does not warrant any more patience now that a team that won the league last season by 10 points is only one place above the relegation zone. Leicester could theoretically be in the bottom three by the time they play their next game, at home to Liverpool on Monday, and their FA Cup fifth-round defeat at Millwall has also counted agains...
