2022 Subaru BRZ Debuts With New 228 HP N/A Boxer, Stiffer Chassis And More Tech

Image
Subaru has finally pulled the wraps off the new 2022 BRZ, the second generation of the Japanese sports coupe, which now features an improved chassis, a new naturally aspirated engine, and the same performance focus as its predecessor. Let’s begin with what’s under the bonnet; Subaru opted for a new naturally aspirated 2.4-liter flat-four engine with a redline at 7,000 rpm, producing 228 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque. That’s 15 percent more torque than the previous model. The new engine helps the 2022 Subaru BRZ to achieve an even lower center of gravity and will be paired to either a standard six-speed manual with a short-throw shifter or a six-speed automatic transmission that features a new Sport mode for more rapid downshifts. A limited-slip differential will be standard across the range. Subaru claims that the new BRZ is the lightest 2+2 production sports car in the U.S. market, tipping the scales at just under 2,900 lbs (1,315 kg) estimated. That’s possible thanks to the use of alumi...

2020 Subaru Outback Revealed With Turbo Power And More Tech Than Ever

Image
Subaru has pulled the wraps off the all-new 2020 Outback at the New York Auto Show, giving us a first look at the sixth generation of the popular crossover wagon. As ever, the 2020 Subaru Outback is a jacked-up wagon version of the also new Legacy, adopting the same design but with added ruggedness, featuring plenty of body cladding and model-specific bumpers to show off its more adventurous character. By switching over to Subaru’s latest global platform, the Outback will benefit from better rigidity and more refinement, as well as improved handling. The new model also features 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which is greater than most competitive SUV models in the market. The new generation of the Subaru Outback has ditched the six-cylinder powetrain of the outgoing model in favor of the turbocharged 260hp 2.4-liter unit found in the Legacy and the Ascent. Base models will get the naturally aspirated 182hp 2.5-liter flat-four unit. Both powertrains will be paired to the co...

Subaru’s Viziv Adrenaline Concept Revealed

Image
Subaru has revealed the Viziv Adrenaline Concept, which is the first study to adopt the company’s “Bolder” design language. Through the new philosophy, Subaru aims “to broaden the brand’s outlook, define the characteristics of Subaru vehicles more prominently, and create more enjoyment for all passengers.” All those objectives sound good but are quite vague. While the automaker isn’t willing to reveal much about its intentions with the new concept car, the photos reveal a youthful crossover with a sporty look. Subaru says the body shape exhibits a dynamic and strong feel, with highlights including the unique roof design and prominent body cladding. The roof not only looks cool but also reinforces the body structure. Other notable details include the sleek LED headlights and taillights, lack of door handles, rearview cameras, white accents on the alloy wheels shod with rugged all-terrain tires, and the reasonably high ground clearance. The Subaru Viziv Adrenaline Concept...

Subaru Viziv Adrenaline Concept Looks Like A Boldly Styled Compact SUV

Image
The 2019 Geneva Motor Show is exactly two weeks away, and automakers are currently making the final preparations for the biggest automotive event of the spring. Most of them anyway, as some will abstain. Subaru will be there, though, and will unveil the Viziv Adrenaline Concept. As far as we can tell by the dark teaser image released by the Japanese company, the new Viziv Adrenaline appears to be a small crossover. It appears to have a three-door body style, the brand’s grille at the front flanked by a couple of futuristic headlights with integrated LED DRLs, and a muscular hood. The wheel arches are very prominent, the traditional side mirrors have been replaced by a couple of cameras and there’s a generous ground clearance. In Subaru slang, Viziv means ‘Vision for Innovation’, so could this mean that the new Adrenaline show car serves as a preview for a possible future product? The automaker hasn’t said anything else about it, except that it will be unveiled at the press brief...

2020 Subaru Legacy Plays It Safe With Styling, Gains 260HP Turbo Boxer

Image
Subaru has unveiled the all-new 2020 Legacy at this year’s Chicago Auto Show, and will combat the likes of the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Mazda6 with a car that’s technically superior to its predecessor. Among its highlights, we count the new XT models with a 260 HP 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine, an upgraded 182 HP 2.5-liter boxer, an 11.6-inch tablet-style infotainment display, higher quality interior and new active safety tech. Even though the 2020 Legacy doesn’t look all that different to its predecessor, it is actually a brand new car. For starters, it has wider fenders and a higher trunk surface for a more dynamic stance. There are also new side mirrors, in case anyone noticed. Overall, though, this new model is recognizable as a Legacy, which could be a good or a bad thing, depending on perspective and sense of style. It is, however, more practical than before, with 15.1 cu.ft (427 liters) of cargo capacity and 1.4 inches (3.55 cm) of additional cargo floor ...

2019 Subaru STI S209 Debuts As STI’s Most Powerful Production Car Ever

Image
U.S. Subaru buyers have suffered enough for the lack of track-bred WRX STI models such as the S207 and S208. While those two performance versions were exclusive to Japan, the latest of the STI “S-line” models is now available exclusively to U.S. buyers. It’s called the STI S209 and it’s based on the WRX STI sedan. To create the new model, Subaru Tecnica International has tuned various components of the stock WRX STI including engine and chassis, spicing everything up with exclusive exterior and interior parts. For starters, the WRX STI’s EJ25 2.5-liter turbo engine now delivers 341 horsepower courtesy of many modifications headlined by an HKS turbocharger with a larger turbine and compressor, as well as an increased maximum boost pressure of 18.0 psi (16.2 psi for the WRX STI). The four-cylinder flat-four engine also features forged pistons and connecting rods that are both lighter and stronger. The list of extensive upgrades also includes a high-flow intake system wit...

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Debuts With PHEV Powertrain, 17 Mile Electric Range

Image
Subaru has unveiled its first plug-in hybrid, ahead of its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Set to go on sale next year, the 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid features an all-new “StarDrive” powertrain which consists of a 2.0-liter boxer engine, two electric motors, a symmetrical all-wheel drive system and a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission. One of the electric motors functions as an engine starter, but it can also be used to as a generator to produce electricity for the 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The second electric motor powers the car while also recharging the battery via regenerative braking. This setup enables the Crosstrek Hybrid to have a combined maximum output of approximately 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS). While that doesn’t sound like much, the car can accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) one second faster than the standard Crosstrek which has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 152 hp (113 kW / 154 PS) and 145 lb-ft (196 Nm) of torque. Im...

The Paris Motor Show is still two weeks away, but that isn’t stopping the Los Angeles Auto Show from stealing some of its thunder. Other possible candidates include the X3 M and X4 M which were teased earlier this month.
