Hummer Returns As A 1,000 HP Electric Pickup From GMC

Nearly a decade after the last Hummer rolled off the assembly line, the brand is back and more powerful than ever.

Introduced earlier, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV marks the return of an icon and a glimpse into GM’s electric future.

Looking far more streamlined than previous models, the GMC Hummer EV features a minimalist grille which is flanked by slender LED headlights. However, they’re largely an afterthought as the front end is dominated by a massive bumper and skid plate which hint at the model’s off-road prowess.

Continuing further back, we can see pronounced fender flares and a short windscreen.  The model also has a relatively flat roof with removal panels that allow for a truly open-air experience.

The panels are transparent and can be stored in the frunk when removed.  While the windshield doesn’t fold down like on the Jeep Gladiator, the rear window can be electronically lowered.

Out back, there’s LED taillights and a heavy duty bumper with D-rings.  The model also has a six-position MultiPro tailgate and a short bed with a powered tonneau cover.

Given its off-road intentions, the truck comes standard with 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler All Territory MT tires. They enable the model to scale 18 inch (457 mm) vertical obstacles and drive through more than 2 feet (610 mm) of water. If that’s not impressive enough, the truck can be equipped with even larger 37-inch tires.

Moving into the cabin, there’s a freestanding 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a ‘floating’ 13.4-inch infotainment system.  The latter provides easy access to the Hummer’s UltraVision system which features up to 18 different camera views.  They range from a “virtual spotter” to underbody cameras to aid in avoiding obstacles.

The infotainment system will also display off-road widgets which provide information about terrain status and vehicle functions.  GMC said this includes locker engagement, tire pressure as well as pitch and roll angles – among other things.

Sticking with the tech theme, the truck will be offered with the latest version of the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system.  It allows for hands-free driving on more than 200,000 miles (321,869 km) of compatible highways in the United States and Canada.

Power comes from three motors which produce an estimated combined output of 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS) and 11,500 lb-ft (15,592 Nm) of torque. This will enable the four-wheel drive pickup to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in approximately three seconds when using the “Watts to Freedom” launch control system.

The motors are powered by an Ultium battery pack which enables the truck to have a range in excess of 350 miles (563 km). When it comes time to recharge, you’ll be thankful for the Hummer’s charging capacity of up to 350 kW. It enables the truck to get nearly 100 miles (161 km) of range with a ten minute charge.

Those are insane figures for a pickup and the impressive features don’t end there.  As previously teased, the Hummer EV will be available with a four-wheel steering system that features a CrabWalk function. It enables the front and rear wheels to steer at the same angle at low speeds, enabling the truck to drive diagonally.  While it might sound a bit gimmicky, GMC noted it allows for greater maneuverability on challenging terrain.

Speaking of off-roading, the model will have an adaptive air suspension with an available Extract Mode.  It enables the suspension to be raised six inches (149 mm) for tackling extreme terrain.

The Hummer EV is being launched in an Edition 1 trim which costs $112,595.  That’s not pocket change, but the truck comes fully loaded and features a white exterior as well as a Lunar Horizon interior with bronze accents.

Following the model’s launch next year, the company will offer a Hummer EV 3X in the fall of 2022 for $99,995.  It will retain the three-motor powertrain, but have a reduced output of approximately 800 hp (597 kW / 811 PS) and 9,500 lb-ft (12,880 Nm) of torque.  The truck’s range will also drop to 300+ miles (483+ km).

Several months later, in the spring of 2023, GMC will introduce a 2X variant for $89,995.  It features a dual motor powertrain that develops around 625 hp (466 kW / 634 PS) and 7,400 lb-ft (10,033 Nm) of torque.  Despite the performance drop, the model will still be able to travel more than 300 miles (483 km) on a single charge.

One year later, in the spring of 2024, the company will launch a base model for $79,995.  It will use the 2X’s motors, but have a reduced range of 250+ miles (402+ km).

The GMC Hummer EV will be built at Factory Zero and launched late next year.  The company is currently accepting reservations for $100.
