2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV Debuts With 830 HP And 300+ Miles Of Range

The H2 and H3 were Hummer’s bread and butter, and the company is returning to its roots with the all-new 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV.

Unveiled during the NCAA’s Final Four basketball tournament, via a commercial narrated by LeBron James, the GMC Hummer EV SUV is an electric heavyweight that will get people talking.

The model follows in the footsteps of the pickup and features a familiar front end with an illuminated grille that is flanked by slender headlights. Below, there’s a beefy skid plate and prominent D-rings.

Moving further back, the model has bulging fenders and an upright windscreen. The Infinity Roof carries over from the pickup and features removable Sky Panels that can be stored in the frunk. However, the big news is the fully enclosed rear end which has a full-size spare tire out back.

While the model looks good in standard form, owners will be able to extensively customize the SUV as nearly 200 accessories will be available at launch. The model can also be equipped with an Extreme Off-Road package, which we’ll talk about shortly.

The five-seat interior largely carries over and drivers will find a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as well as a 13.4-inch infotainment system. The model also has a floating center console, rugged switchgear and the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system.

The latter allows for hands-free driving on more than 200,000 miles (321,869 km) of compatible roadway in the United States and Canada. Hummer is also using the “enhanced” version of Super Cruise and this allows for automated lane changes.

Like the pickup, the SUV is based on GM’s Ultium platform and will be launched in an exclusive Edition 1 trim. It will go into production in early 2023 and start at $105,595.

For an additional $5,000 customers can add an Extreme Off-Road package, which features 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch off-road tires. The package also includes rock sliders, underbody production, a front eLocker and virtual rear lockers. Other highlights include heavy-duty ball-spline half shafts and an UltraVision system that provides an assortment of off-road camera views.

The Edition 1 has a tri-motor powertrain that develops up to 830 hp (619 kW / 842 PS) and 11,500 lb-ft (15,592 Nm) of torque. It will enable the SUV to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in approximately 3.5 seconds.

There’s no word on why the SUV isn’t getting a 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS) variant like the truck, but the model will have a range in excess of 300 miles (483 km). However, the Extreme Off-Road package cuts that distance to 280+ miles (451 km).

A few months later, in the spring of 2023, Hummer will launch 2X and 3X variants. The 3X has the same powertrain as the Edition 1, but loses some of its special features and has a lower base price of $99,995.

The 2X will start at $89,995 and have a dual motor powertrain that produces up to 625 hp (466 kW / 634 PS) and 7,400 lb-ft (10,033 Nm) of torque. GMC didn’t say how fast this version will be, but the model will have a range in excess of 300 miles (483 km) just like its more powerful siblings. The 2X and 3X will also be offered with the aforementioned Extreme Off-Road package.

In the spring of 2024, GMC will launch an entry-level 2 variant for $79,995. While it has two electric motors that produce a combined output of 625 hp (466 kW / 634 PS) and 7,400 lb-ft (10,033 Nm) of torque, the model features 400V charging technology and a smaller battery pack that allows for 250+ miles (402+ km) of range. However, customers will be able to upgrade to 800V technology and a larger battery pack that provides 300+ miles (483+ km) of range.

Speaking of performance, GMC said we can expect “impressive departure and breakover angles” as well as a tight turning circle of 35.4 feet (10.8 meters).  The latter is possible thanks to a 4 Wheel Steer system that comes standard on the 2X, 3X and Edition 1.
