Mercedes-Benz Concept A Sedan Previews Future Compact Cars

The intriguing new Mercedes-Benz Concept A Sedan has just been introduced by the German automaker at the Shanghai Auto Show 2017.

Created to previewed the next-generation range of compact vehicles from Mercedes, the Concept A Sedan looks dramatically different to the small A-Class, B-Class and CLA models we are familiar with and is widely thought to directly preview a next-generation A-Class sedan.

The front of the concept is dramatically different than the existing A-Class or CLA models and includes the company’s now trademark Panamerican front grille. It also has been fitted with triangular-shaped headlights with an intrinsic inner design complete with purple illuminated elements. Mercedes says the grid structure found in the headlights has been coated in UV paint and then exposed to ultraviolet light, hence the purple glow. Also at the front is a gaping wide lower air intake with prominent black outer components.

Elsewhere, the Concept A Sedan includes slimline wing mirrors, door handles that sit flush with the body and a floating B-pillar. There’s also muscular front and rear wheel arches and large, 20-inch wheels. The rear quarter panels and fascia are reminiscent of the current CLA but feature much sharper edges and like the front, triangular taillights that taper towards the license plate area.

Speaking about the vehicle, chief designer officer for Daimler AG Gorden Wagener said “Our Concept A Sedan shows that the time of creases is over. With its perfect proportions and a sensual treatment of surfaces with reduced lines, it is the next milestone of Sensual Purity and has the potential to introduce a new design era.”
