New Peugeot 508 SW Gives The Sleek Sedan A Longer Roof


The French know a thing or two about style. Always have, and as Peugeot showed with the launch of the new 508 sedan just months ago, they still do. And now they’ve done it again with the new 508 SW.


Shorthand for Sport Wagon, the extended-roof version of the Peugeot’s D-segment saloon has now been revealed ahead of its scheduled debut at the Paris Motor Show and sales debut next January.


“After the radical fastback coupĂ©-saloon, we now have the estate car,” said Peugeot CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato. “And it’s just as punchy and breath-taking! New Peugeot 508 SW confirms the Brand’s transformation and this model with its spectacular body line and impressive features, it really enriches the range. Our ambition to make Peugeot the leading premium-range mainstream brand is taking shape very nicely.”


At 1.42 meters (56 inches) tall, the SW is slung just as low as the sedan, and stretches just 3 cm (1.18”) longer. And like the sedan, it features frameless side windows. They’re just topped in this case by a longer roofline and roof rails for securing cargo. It also has more space inside, with 530 liters (18.7 cubic feet) of cargo capacity with the luggage cover closed. Fold the rear seats down and that grows to 1,780 liters – equivalent to nearly 63 cubic feet, or about the same as a VW Touareg.


Since the roof doesn’t slant back the same way that the sedan’s does, it also has more headroom for the rear-seat passengers, with a seatback that can tilt 27 degrees. And there’s a big glass sunroof to let the sunshine in. But from the B-pillar forward, it’s essentially the same as the sleek sedan inside – right down to the i-Cockpit dashboard system.


PSA will offer the 508 SW with a choice of six engine options – two gasoline and four diesels, ranging in displacement from 1.5 to 2.0 liters and producing between 130 (in the base diesel) to 225 metric horsepower (in the top petrol unit). They come mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and there’ll be a plug-in hybrid version to follow in the later part of next year, too.
