McLaren Special Operations Reveals New Race-Inspired MSO X


McLaren’s MSO division showcased their latest special MSO X models, based on the 570S.


McLaren Newport Beach commissioned 10 MSO X cars that are designed and engineered to emulate the look and feel of the 570S GT4 race car but retain their road-legal status.


The whole project took just eight months to be finished, from concept to reality and the finished cars were presented at a special customer event in Las Vegas.


On the outside, the new MSO X mirrors the appearance of the 570S GT4 as closely as possible and even comes finished in liveries inspired by the legendary F1 GTR endurance race cars.


The big rear wing provides an extra 100kg of downforce while the rest of the package includes a roof snorkel, dive planes, an MSO Titanium Super Sports exhaust, Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires and a GT4-style bonnet with air intakes that work in conjunction with the roof snorkel.


The bodywork also makes extensive use of satin-finish carbon fiber, including the roof, bonnet, side skirts and engine cover, as well as a unique rear bumper with cut-outs.


“Customers come to us with their thoughts and ideas and MSO works with them to set boundaries within which they can then let their imaginations run wild,” said Jolyon Nash, McLaren Automotive Executive Director, Global Sales and Marketing. “What could be better than a McLaren buyer playing the role of ‘race engineer’ in briefing the MSO team and directing them to test and validate those ideas to create a race-bred road car such as this?”


The interior features a minimalistic, more track-oriented approach; parts of the carbon-fiber Monocell 2 chassis are exposed, there are carbon-shelled bucket seats, carbon sills and a bespoke carbon fiber bulkhead that features stowage space for a helmet.  Furthermore, the center tunnel storage has been removed and the center console is the same raised item you’d find in a 570S GT4.


“The aim of this project was to have a serious track car that could still be driven on the road and this finished project screams ‘race car’ to the casual onlooker,” said McLaren Newport Beach Dealer Principal, Pietro Frigerio. “To have the MSO X project go from renderings at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last July to the 10 magnificent supercars that we handed over to our excited clients today, is nothing short of amazing.”

Droptop crossovers have always been rather odd and the T-Roc Cabriolet is no different. It will be the only convertible Volkswagen on sale for the foreseeable future and will celebrate its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Ford's new GT Competition Series was built with weight-saving in mind, but also with an improved center of gravity for better road-holding.
