Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door Coupe Is (Almost) Ready For Its Closeup

Mercedes, it should come as no great surprise, is preparing to roll out a new four-door coupe – the more capacious counterpart to the AMG GT coupe and convertible. We know that much from all the teaser images and spy shots we’ve seen (and brought you) to date. And now the automaker has released another batch.

Set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month, the production version of the rather stunning GT Concept is slated to emerge as an even more performance-focused four-door coupe than the CLS that arguably kicked off the modern trend. Especially now that the only AMG version of the new CLS is the hybrid 53, with no 63 version expected to follow.

That place in the lineup will now be held by the as-yet unnamed model previewed here, testing in all sorts of environments: on the track, along city streets, and down country roads. It’s pictured wearing the same neon flames over matte black camo, keeping its finer details under wraps and hinting at the hot-rod nature of the vehicle underneath.

As much as we’ve seen of the forthcoming new model, though, there remains much we don’t know. For one thing, we don’t know what it will be called – but we’re fairly certain it won’t share the same name as the Mercedes-AMG GT4 racer. The bigger mystery, however, is what we’ll find under the hood.

Aside from the 65-series V12 (which we’d be surprised to find in this application), Affalterbach’s flagship engine is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. In the E63 S, that motor produces 603 horsepower. A hybrid version of the same featured in the aforementioned concept previewing this model, kicking out an astonishing 800 hp. That’d be more than enough to give the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and its 671 hp a run for its proverbial money.

At this rate, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out what the German automaker has in store for this new model.
