McLaren Debuts New 570S Spider, Costs £20,000 More Than The Coupe
Powered by a 570 PS 3.8-liter twin turbo V8, the new £164,750 McLaren 570S Spider is said to be just as quick as its fixed roof sibling.
Following the success of the new 720S Launch Edition, McLaren will apply the same formula to the 570S Spider, kicking things off with 400 Launch Edition models.
"The McLaren 570S Spider is the most attainable McLaren Spider to date and adds yet another dimension to the McLaren Sports Series family," stated McLaren CEO, Mike Flewitt, adding that its mid-engine layout and carbon fiber chassis "guarantee the same thrilling dynamic performance and exceptional driver involvement enjoyed in a 570S Coupe."
With the 570S Spider, McLaren can now add a third body style to their Sports Series portfolio, alongside the Coupe and the GT models. However, unlike those two, the 570S Spider features an integrated retractable hardtop, which can be lowered or raised in as little as 15 seconds, at speeds of up to 40 km/h (25 mph). The hardtop adds just 46 kg (101 lbs) to the weight of the car.
The two-piece roof is made out of lightweight composite panels and doesn't compromise the 570S Spider at all in terms of its performance. Speaking of which, with 570 PS and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque being sent to the rear wheels with the help of a seven-speed gearbox, the 570S Spider will hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds, before maxing out at 328 km/h (204 mph). Its top speed (with the roof in place) is identical to that of the 570S Coupe. With the roof lowered, the new Spider will max out at 315 km/h (196 mph), which is still a supercar-worthy number.
Other figures that might interest you are the 419 PS-per-tonne power-to-weight ratio, 0 to 200 km/h (124 mph) acceleration time of 9.6 seconds, 1/4 mile time of 11 seconds flat and the 10.7 liters/100 km (26.6 mpg) it will gobble up on an average NEDC cycle. As for CO2 emissions, they stand at 249g/km.
Since the Spider is all about driving with the roof down, future buyers will be interested to know that they can spec the car with an optional sports system that channels exhaust sound towards the cabin, using the area beneath the tonneau cover. Wind-buffeting is also not an issue thanks to the glazed wind deflector, which you can raise or lower at the push of a button.
In terms of design, the exterior of the 570S Spider is enhanced by the Dark Palladium gray rear spoiler, which is 12 mm (0.47 in) taller than the rear spoiler found on the 570S Coupe - providing additional downforce to offset the aero changes brought on by the new rear upper body design. Aesthetically though, if the Dark Palladium gray doesn't suit, customers can also opt for a visible carbon fiber finish at additional cost via MSO.
Speaking of aesthetics, as well as comfort, once inside the 570S Spider, you'll find hand-stitched leather on the seats, door casings, dashboard and center console, plus features such as the 10" TFT main instrument cluster and a centrally mounted 7" IRIS touchscreen, which can be used to control temperature and infotainment. Options include the all-new 10-spoke 19/20" alloys, or the eight-way adjustable electric memory seats, with either Nappa leather or performance-oriented Alcantara trim available at additional cost. Also extra are the carbon fiber-shelled sports seats, the same ones fitted to a McLaren P1.
McLaren is also launching three new exterior colors alongside the new Spider, as Curacao Blue, Vega Blue and Sicilian Yellow now join the existing Sports Series palette. Also new is a Liquid Black brake caliper color.
The new McLaren 570S Spider will make its public debut on June 29th at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and is available to order now from over 80 official retailers worldwide, as first deliveries are expected in August.
