2017 Audi R8 Spyder Opens Up In New York City

The new R8 Spyder is finally uncovered via official channels - because unofficially we got the chance to see it in full a lot earlier.

The main figures are: 540hp from the naturally aspirated V10 engine, 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 198mph (318km/h).

Audi went for a lightweight cloth top, just like the previous model, which needs 20 seconds to open and close in speeds of up to 31mph (50km/h). The rear window is individually retractable, meaning that it can be lowered, even with the roof up.

“With its spontaneous throttle response, quick revving-up and inimitable sound, the 5.2 FSI naturally aspirated engine in the new Audi R8 Spyder delivers undiluted emotion,” remarked Dr.-Ing. Stefan Knirsch, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development. “Compared to the R8 Coupé, the engine sound in the open high-performance sports car now delivers an even more intense experience.”

Compared to the previous model, Audi says that they have increased the torsional rigidity of the body by more than 50 per cent. The new R8 Spyder weighs 1,612 kg dry, with Audi reinforcing specific areas in the chassis, including the sills, A-pillars and the windscreen frame. These reinforcements are now lighter by 10 per cent, which translates into a very significant 113 kg weight saving over its predecessor.

Other than that, it’s pretty much known territory as the new Audi R8 Spyder uses the same seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with the 158kg lighter coupe model, sending power to all four wheels.

Losing the roof should mean now that the V10’s howling soundtrack can more audible into the cabin, making the whole driving experience of the Audi R8 a notch (or two) more emotional.
