Borgward Reveals Projekt BX6 TS And BX5 For Geneva

After showcasing the BX7 SUV at the 2015 IAA in Frankfurt, Borgward is back with two new propositions for the booming mid-size SUV segment.

Yes, the SUV/Crossover market is about to get bigger thanks to the car maker’s plans to expand its line-up with two new interesting models, presented in pre-production form at Geneva: The Projekt BX6 TS and the BX5. As their names hint, these two models would sit below the bigger BX7.

Described as a “prototype approaching the series-production stage”, the (red) BX5 features equipment based largely on mass-production technology as well as plug-in-hybrid drive system composed of an internal combustion engine and electric motor (developing a total output of 258 hp).

Unlike its bigger sibling, the BX5 has a more dynamic, chiseled look, in spite of measuring 4,483 mm in length, 1,876 mm in width and 1,677 mm in height. Its overall design and style is somewhat reminiscent of Mazda’s CX-5 model, but it remains an interesting proposition for the segment nonetheless.

The 4.51-metre-long Projekt BX6 wants to be the “exceptionally sporty” variant of the two, adopting a coupe-like roofline to emphasize this aspect. Judging by its more daring design and big wheels, this model is more production-ready than the BX5, but it too benefits from a plug-in hybrid system that marries a turbocharged four-pot with an electric motor in order to produce a total of 422 hp to all four wheels.

Borgward’s latest resurrection was created with China in mind, but it’s clear that the BAIC-owned company plans to penetrate Europe as well, and these two automobiles seem up for the task.
